Getting out and staying out
Short-term prisoners have exceptionally high reconviction rates. Growing recognition of this and of deficiencies in prison-probation coordination has accelerated ‘resettlement’ of ex-prisoners up the penal agenda. This report looks at the effectiveness of these strategies in detail through three case studies of ‘Resettlement Pathfinders’ projects
Voluntary After‐Care and the Probation Service
In a Home Office funded study of the voluntary after‐care of short‐term prisoners, the authors found that this area of probation service activity had decreased markedly in volume and perceived priority. The argument is that recurrent famines, which are more likely to occur during rapid socio-economic, technological and institutional transitions, introduce longterm changes in gender relations.
