Narratives of Sedition in Late Antique Historiography and in Photius
In the ninth century, the Byzantine intellectual Photius summarised literary works in his enigmatic Bibliotheca, which are our main or only source for otherwise lost historians of Late Antiquity. Until now, the short cult hymns to Liber, Mars and Juno in the Appendix Claudianea have mostly been seen as rhetorical school exercises. Yet a philological-historical analysis shows that they could be remains of occasional poetry from everyday life. The epigraphic collection of the Department of Ancient History at the University of Graz preserves two 19th century squeezes without any further description. It can be shown that they originate from Ephesus and that they display more complete texts of IK Ephesos 1891A and 287.7 than previously known.
