Labour unrest in the context of multiple crises
By presenting the first comparative data of trade union and workers' protests since Covid-19, based on local sources, this article attempts to fill a significant gap in the empirical research on cross-country comparisons of labour mobilizations. This special section aims to shed light on moral milieus and agencies in contemporary capitalist central and eastern Europe. Drawing on case studies from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Russia, it offers insight into changing perceptions of proper economy and practice amongst a broad range of actors—from landfill workers to business managers and the super-rich. This article discusses perceptions of continuity and change as viewed from the shop floor of a privatized postsocialist factory. Neoliberal templates have reshaped the organization of production and resulted in a fragmentation of the workforce and new inequalities. These shifts, which have become main topic of everyday workplace conversation, have not generated critical commentary on wider encompassing neoliberal inequalities. Instead, critique h…

In this article I discuss some of the theoretical implications of adopting moral economy as an approach to analysing new forms of flexible production and work.
