High measles and rubella vaccine coverage and seroprevalence among Zambian children participating in a measles and rubella supplementary immunization activity
Post-campaign coverage surveys estimate the proportion of previously unvaccinated children vaccinated during supplementary immunization activities (SIA) but cannot address whether susceptible children seronegative to measles and rubella viruses were vaccinated during the SIA. We conducted a cross-sectional serosurvey nested within the November 2020 measles-rubella SIA in Zambia, systematically sampling children aged 9 months to 5 years at 30 SIA …
Changes in household composition and their effects on the academic achievement of orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV in rural Zambia
The African kinship system facilitates the movement of children and adults between households to mitigate hardship, yet few studies have documented membership changes in rural African households over time and addressed the effects of these household dynamics on the developmental outcomes of children. We used a household inventory instrument to document the number of changes in household membership experienced by 93 households in rural Zambia betw…
Feasibility and acceptability of collecting dried blood spots (DBS) from children after vaccination during supplementary immunization activities to estimate measles and rubella seroprevalence
Nested serosurveys within routine service delivery platforms such as planned supplemental immunization activities (SIAs) provide an opportunity to collect information that can be used to answer valuable questions on the effectiveness and efficiency of the delivery model to inform future activities. However, integrating research data collection in SIAs is rarely done due to concerns it will negatively impact the program. We conducted a serosurvey …
Exploring the links between household chores, learning, and mathematics performance in Zambia
Cognitive and academic performance of rural Zambian youth exposed to HIV
Studies focusing on children affected by HIV have shown that they have generally lower academic performance, however, few studies separate children who are HIV exposed and infected (CHEI) and those who are HIV exposed but uninfected (CHEU). Importantly, in rural sub-Saharan Africa, the majority of studies on CHEI and CHEU examine academic performance indirectly based on cognitive test scores. Therefore, studies assessing the effects of HIV on aca…
Who is Advocating for Children and Adolescents With HIV Infection
Despite significant gains in the past 10 years in the treatment and care of children and adolescents with HIV infection, there is still need for advocacy for this group. The author discusses how far we have come and the need for on-going efforts, not only for appropriate child-friendly drug formulations, but also for cooperation between quantitative and qualitative scientists to further the existing knowledge base of how best to help these childr…
Predictors of loss to follow-up among children on long-term antiretroviral therapy in Zambia (2003–2015)
Among the children LTFU mortality and default were substantially high. Children who started treatment in recent years (2013-2015) had the highest hazard of LTFU. Lack of access to a phone and non-disclosure of HIV-status to the index child was associated with higher hazards of LTFU. We recommend re-enforcement of client counselling and focused follow-up strategies using modern technology such as mobile phones as adjunct to current approaches
Long-term survival outcomes of HIV infected children receiving antiretroviral therapy
We observed low attrition due to mortality among children on ART. Loss to follow-up was high (16%). Mortality was highest during the first 3 months of treatment. Children aged less than one year and those with advanced WHO disease stage had higher mortality. We recommend effective interventions to improve retention in care and early diagnosis of HIV in children
Postnatal care utilization and local understandings of contagion among HIV-infected and uninfected women in rural, southern Zambia
Postnatal care is essential for ensuring the optimal health of newborns and necessary for the prevention of maternal-to-child human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission as well as the early diagnosis and treatment of HIV-infected infants. However, coverage of postnatal care is low in many rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa. We examined women's experiences of accessing formal postnatal care for their HIV-exposed newborns, comparing reports of …
