  • Multiple-factor classification of a human-modified forest landscape in the Hsuehshan Mountain Range, Taiwan

  • The Fine Scale Ethnotaxa Classification of Millets in Southern India

Open Access•Jose Rey Maloles, Kevan Berg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2011

This research explores variation in minor millets in the context of traditional knowledge (TK) and scientific knowledge (SK), including ethnobotany genomics, in southern India. In order to perceive biodiversity, we need to take a closer look at the natural variation among species within the context of existing classifications using both TK and SK. Malayali informants of the Kolli Hills in India were surveyed using 174 millet samples. We also coll…

  • Ethnobotany genomics - discovery and innovation in a new era of exploratory research

    Open Access•Steven G Newmaster, Subramanyam Ragupathy•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology and…•2010•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 37

We present here the first use of DNA barcoding in a new approach to ethnobotany we coined "ethnobotany genomics". This new approach is founded on the concept of 'assemblage' of biodiversity knowledge, which includes a coming together of different ways of knowing and valorizing species variation in a novel approach seeking to add value to both traditional knowledge (TK) and scientific knowledge (SK). We employed contemporary genomic technology, DN…

  • Valorizing the 'Irulas' traditional knowledge of medicinal plants in the Kodiakkarai Reserve Forest, India

    Open Access•Subramanyam Ragupathy, Steven G Newmaster•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology and…•2009•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 43

A mounting body of critical research is raising the credibility of Traditional Knowledge (TK) in scientific studies. These studies have gained credibility because their claims are supported by methods that are repeatable and provide data for quantitative analyses that can be used to assess confidence in the results. The theoretical importance of our study is to test consensus (reliability/replicable) of TK within one ancient culture; the Irulas o…

  • The Multi-Mechanistic Taxonomy of the Irulas in Tamil Nadu, South India

Open Access•Steven G Newmaster, Subramanyam Ragupathy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2007

Researchers have debated on the extent of universality of classification systems in ethnobiology, with little attention to the fundamental mechanisms that underpin aboriginal taxonomy. In a mechanistic approach we challenge previous notions that aboriginal taxonomy is based predominantly on one particular mechanism (e.g., universal taxonomy, utilitarian, morphological, ecological). We hypothesize that traditional knowledge has evolved to include …
