Improving psychosocial health and employment outcomes for individuals receiving methadone treatment
It is important to consider how the contexts of interventions might elicit and/or support clients' engagement. Further research is needed to explore how an individual's background (e.g., involvement with different interventions over an extended period) may influence engagement. Long-term engagement may be necessary to sustain some positive outcomes although how long is unclear and requires further research. Engagement can occur without complete a…
Open drug scenes
Prevention, harm reduction and treatment should be combined with law enforcement based on cooperation between police, health care and social services. The aim should be "coexistence" between society and users of illegal substances and the strategy based on several years planning and conjoint efforts. The solutions are found in appropriate combinations of harm reduction and restrictive measures
Nonprescribed use of tranquilizers or sedatives by adolescents
A substantial proportion of Brazilian adolescents use nonprescribed tranquilizers/sedatives. Easy access to these substances seems to play an important role in this use and should be tackled by preventive and treatment interventions
Distributive sharing among HIV–HCV co-infected injecting drug users
This study, based on data from the MANIF 2000 cohort study, investigates the relationship between the lending of injecting equipment, drug use, and experience with HIV care. The sample comprised 224 HIV-HCV co-infected patients who reported having injected drugs in the previous six months and their 538 visits to clinical services. Longitudinal data were collected for medical status, and self-reported risk behaviors. A logistic regression GEE mode…
What treatment means in practice
There is evidence that treatment for opiate addiction is effective in reducing drug use and offending (Prendergast et al. 2002; Gossop et al. 2003), based on effective combinations of substitution prescribing and evidenced psychosocial treatments (McLellan et al. 1993), yet concerns that few structured interventions are delivered in 'real life' settings. The current study assessed what keyworkers perceive as going on in drug working sessions in t…

The risk of drug swallowing at the point of arrest
The increase in cocaine use in young people has been reflected in an increase in the number of deaths in which cocaine is identified post mortem. This increase is evident in relation to police custody deaths. In the current analysis, 43 drug-related deaths in custody are considered with cocaine identified in 24 of the post mortem examinations. The article examines the characteristics of these deaths, with particular attention paid to the method a…
Reduced injection risk and sexual risk behaviours after drug misuse treatment
This paper investigates injecting, shared use of needles/syringes and sexual risk behaviours at intake to treatment and at one-year follow-up among 753 drug users recruited to the National Treatment Outcome Research Study (NTORS). Injecting, sharing and having unprotected sex were substantially reduced among clients admitted to methadone programmes and among those admitted to residential treatments. The overall levels of risk fell after treatment…
Understanding the Developmental Relationship Between Drug Use and Crime
The study investigates developmental associations in the relationship between drug use and crime among 100 treatment-seeking opiate addicts. While 56% of the sample report having committed 2,785 acquisitive crimes in the previous month, there are strong developmental patterns. Those who have committed crimes before age 14 have earlier onset of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis and cocaine use and a lower first age of heroin problems. This relates to per…

Diversion tactics
Continuing drug risk behaviour
The study investigates donor sharing and recipient sharing of different types of injecting equipment and the frequency of sharing activities with sexual partners, close friends and casual acquaintances. Structured interviews were conducted with 303 injectors recruited as part of a study of early and episodic opiate use. Subjects were contacted in non-clinical, community settings by a peer recruitment method (Privileged Access Interviews). Spoons …
The Severity of Dependence Scale (SDS)
The Severity of Dependence Scale (SDS) was devised to provide a short, easily administered scale which can be used to measure the degree of dependence experienced by users of different types of drugs. The SDS contains five items, all of which are explicitly concerned with psychological components of dependence. These items are specifically concerned with impaired control over drug taking and with preoccupation and anxieties about drug use. The SD…
Female prostitutes in south London
The present study looks at the association between drug and alcohol use and sexual risk behaviours in a sample of 51 women who were currently working as prostitutes and also currently using opiates and/or stimulants. Most women reported regularly using condoms with clients but a substantial minority sometimes had unprotected sex with clients. There was no overall association between any of the drug use variables (including the use of crack cocain…
Severity of heroin dependence and HIV risk. II. Sharing injecting equipment
One of the most conspicuous risks of HIV transmission among drug injectors involves sharing injecting equipment which has been contaminated by infected blood. The present study investigates the relationship between severity of dependence upon heroin and the sharing of previously used injecting equipment (passive sharing). Four-hundred-and-eight heroin users were contacted and interviewed. Two-hundred-and-eighty-one (69% of the total heroin sample…
Severity of heroin dependence and HIV risk. I. Sexual behaviour
The HIV risks associated with the sexual behaviour of drug injectors have sometimes been overshadowed by the more obvious risks of injection behaviour. In this study, 408 heroin users were interviewed in the community; 50% were not currently in treatment and 42% had never had any treatment contact. In addition to data on drug use, information was collected on sexual risk behaviour by means of a linked anonymous questionnaire (96% returned). Eight…
Categorization, attitude and memory for the source of attitude statements
In a study of factors influencing recognition‐memory for the sources of attitude statements, a final sample of 107 subjects, aged 15–16, first rated their agreement with 24 statements concerning drug‐use, 12 of which were attributed to one, and 12 to another, fictitiously named newspaper. Later, the statements were re shown to subjects with half the names altered, and subjects had to indicate which names were correct (i.e., unaltered). Discrimina…
