Retaining cocaine-abusing women in a therapeutic community
A clinical trial examined whether retention of cocaine-abusing women in a therapeutic community can be improved by permitting their children to live with them during treatment. Crack Cocaine Dealing by Adolescents in Two Public Housing Projects
This paper reports on a pilot study in which 110 individuals, including 34 adolescent dealers in two housing projects were interviewed. The majority of young dealers were no longer in school, and 61% were unemployed. Most of the adolescents' income from crack dealing went to luxury items or business expenses, and not to help support their family. Most young dealers indicated that they were not currently using crack. Their involvement in drug deal…
Behavioral Consequences of Job-Related Stress among Resident Physicians
This study examined the correlations among stressors, psychological strain, and behavioral reactions in a national sample of 1785 resident physicians, 27 to 33 years old. Consistent with previous studies of resident physicians, analysis showed that those experiencing high job-related stressors experienced high psychological strain in both their personal and professional lives. Addicts, police, and the neighborhood social system
The majority of heroin addicts in Chicago meet at drug distribution sites called “copping areas.” One of these sites was selected to study the interactions of the heroin subculture with its host community. Awareness, attitudes, and actions of residents, business people, and police were surveyed. The natural history of a heroin epidemic
Incidence data are presented describing an epidemic of heroin addiction among Negro youth in Chicago following World War 11. The epidemic reached its peak in 1949 and declined during the early 1950s. This report examines the effects of a variety of societal control measures on the epidemic's decline, and the implications of the findings for addiction control programs
