Canadian tuberculosis health care workers’ perspectives on education and counselling for patients and family members who are born outside of Canada
Tuberculosis health care workers (TB HCWs) in low incidence settings have important perspectives on providing TB education and counselling to patients and family members born in other countries. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore HCWs' perspectives on barriers and facilitators for capacity-building education and counselling with patients and family members born outside of Canada experiencing advanced infectious TB in Calgary, a …
Exploring physical activity experiences, barriers, and facilitators among individuals of South Asian heritage living with and beyond cancer
Participants' perspectives provided insights into the PA experiences, barriers, facilitators, and needs of people of South Asian heritage living with and beyond cancer. These results can be used to inform the tailoring of exercise oncology resources to better support physical activity and exercise for this population
Improving infectious TB education for foreign-born patients and family members
Objective: In low tuberculosis (TB) incidence countries, linguistic and cultural dissonance between families experiencing infectious TB and TB health care providers is a barrier to effective communication and successful treatment. The purpose of this research was to explore infectious TB education and counselling from the perspective of patients and family members who are foreign-born. Design/Setting: One component of a multiphase, qualitative ca…
Being Uncertain
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Secondary prevention strategies reduce disease progression to heart failure. Rural cardiac patients typically have less access to health care resources to support them in managing secondary prevention, and services to improve quality of life tend to be lacking in rural settings. The study aim was to examine the process that rural cardiac patients go through to a…
Interventions to Improve Medication Adherence in Ethnically Diverse Patients
Exploring patient and pharmacist perspectives on complex interventions for cardiovascular prevention
BACKGROUND: The Assessing outcomes of enhanced Chronic disease Care through patient Education and a value-baSed formulary Study (ACCESS) is a randomized controlled trial evaluating two interventions targeting barriers to care among those at high risk of cardiovascular disease: copayment elimination for cardioprotective medications, and a tailored self-management support programme. We designed a process evaluation to better understand participant …
South Asian patients’ perceptions and experiences of compassion in healthcare
Background: South Asians are one of the fastest growing ethnic populations in Western countries. Accordingly, providing culturally sensitive healthcare to South Asians is becoming increasingly important. Compassion is a key component of quality healthcare and is central to bridging ethnic and cultural differences between patients and their healthcare providers (HCP). Objective: We aimed to identify and describe the perspectives, experiences, impo…
Feasibility of community-based screening for cardiovascular disease risk in an ethnic community
SA-CHAMP demonstrated the feasibility and value of implementing a lay volunteer-led, culturally adapted, sustainable community-based CVD risk factor screening program in South Asian places of worship in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Subsequent screening and CDM programs were refined based on the learnings from this study. Further research is needed to determine physician and patient factors associated with uptake of and adherence to risk reduction st…
Experiences of French Speaking Immigrants and Non-immigrants Accessing Health Care Services in a Large Canadian City
French speakers residing in predominantly English-speaking communities have been linked to difficulties accessing health care. This study examined health care access experiences of immigrants and non-immigrants who self-identify as Francophone or French speakers in a mainly English speaking province of Canada. We used semi-structured interviews to gather opinions of recent users of physician and hospital services (N = 26). Language barriers and d…
