Suffering, Silence, and the State
Assisted dying has returned to UK policy debate amid legislative scrutiny and growing hospice sector instability. This paper brings 1994 Mass Observation data into dialog with contemporary debates to examine how members of the public understood suffering, autonomy, and care at the end of life. Co-production and participatory research now occupy a prominent place within sociology and across neighbouring disciplines, framed as more inclusive and democratic forms of knowledge-making. Yet the emotional labour that sustains these collaborations often goes unrecognised.
