  • Contextualizing the research problem

Emma Howard, Arthur White et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Research…•2026

Cluster analysis is widely used in educational settings to gain insights into student learning. To justify their choice of clustering approach, authors often draw on methods used in earlier studies that they perceive to be similar. This can sometimes come at the expense of selecting a clustering method better suited to addressing their own study’s goals. We argue that the selection of an appropriate clustering method should be closely connected t…

  • Quantifying participation in, and the effectiveness of, remediating assessment in a university mathematics module

Emma Howard, Maria Meehan et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2019

In Maths for Business, a large first-year mathematics module, the continuous assessment component comprises 10 weekly quizzes which combine to contribute 40% of the final module mark. If students did not receive the full five marks on their weekly quiz, they were provided with the opportunity to resubmit their corrected weekly quiz with an explanation of their error(s) for one additional mark. We refer to this process as ‘remediation’. Of the stu…

  • Measuring industry coagglomeration and identifying the driving forces

Emma Howard, Carol Newman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2015•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 3

Understanding industry agglomeration and its driving forces is critical for the formulation of industrial policy in developing countries. Crucial to this process is the definition and measurement of agglomeration. We construct a new coagglomeration index based purely on the location of firms. We examine what this index reveals about the importance of transport costs, labour market pooling and technology transfer for agglomeration processes, contr…
