  • A large fifth-millennium BC cemetery in the subarctic north of the Baltic Sea

Open Access•A Hakonen, Noora Perälä et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2023•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 8

The European far north is an improbable location for a large prehistoric hunter-gatherer cemetery. Tainiaro, 80km south of the Arctic Circle, was first excavated four decades ago but the unpublished findings and their potential significance have evaded wider recognition. Despite the absence of skeletal evidence, dozens of fifth-millennium BC pits have been tentatively interpreted as burials. Here, the authors present the first analytical and comp…

  • Paleoshorelines and prehistory on the eastern Bothnian Bay coast (Finland)

Samuel Vaneeckhout, Jari Okkonen et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Geography•2012

Research on the relation between the natural environment and human society in northwest coastal Finland between 6500 and 4000 cal BP shows a strong relation between regional environmental variability and changes in human society. It is not only the environmental change but also the regional variability in shoreline displacement that triggered changes in hunter-gatherer society in Finland. Postglacial land uplift caused a reduction of the distance…

  • Social Complexity in the Mid-Holocene Northeastern Bothnian Gulf

Open Access•Andre Costopoulos, Samuel Vaneeckhout et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Archaeology•2012•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 3

There was a period of reduced mobility, increased population density, and social complexity among hunter–gatherers in northern Bothnian prehistory between about 4050 and 2050 cal BC. We argue that this was made possible by a combination of physical and social factors that include the shortening of the coastline due to isostatic land uplift, the reduction of distances between major river mouths along the Bothnian coast, and the local variability i…

  • Places of Importance and Social Communication

Open Access•Jari-Matti Kuusela, Samuel Vaneeckhout et al.•ARTICLE•Estonian Journal of Archaeology•2010•Referencias: 12

This paper studies the cairn field of Viirikallio in Laihia, Finland. Burial sites are extremely complex, being infused with ideological reflections of the society that built them. In the present paper this complex nature is viewed by combining GIS-technology with social theory of Erving Goffman and Pierre Bourdieu. It is suggested that the cairn field functioned, among other things, as a site reflecting the control of important resources, as wel…

  • House Societies among Coastal Hunter-Gatherers

    Samuel Vaneeckhout•ARTICLE•Norwegian Archaeological Review•2010•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 11

In this article I discuss a concept that can be useful for cross-scale comparative research on the origin and evolution of social inequality. Lévi-Strauss' ‘House Society’ concept is theoretically and methodologically useful because of its open and diachronic character. House Societies, used as a framework for explanation, allow comparative research across large temporal and spatial scales. I apply the House Society – adaptive cycle model to the …

  • House Societies among Coastal Hunter-Gatherers A Case Study of Stone Age Ostrobothnia, Finland

Chris Damm, Charlotte Damm et al.•ARTICLE•Norwegian Archaeological Review•2010

Charlotte Damm In this article Samuel Vaneeckhout introduces the term ‘House Societies’ to the northern Fennoscandian Neolithic, a term originating in Levi-Strauss' description of the Northwest Coa
