Advancing collaborative research for health
The calls for health research to be collaborative are ubiquitous—even as part of a recent World Health Assembly resolution on clinical trials—yet the arguments in support of collaborative research have been taken for granted and are absent in the literature. This article provides three arguments to justify why health research ought to be collaborative and discusses trade-offs to be considered among the ethical values guiding each argument
Research priority-setting is an ethics exercise
To the Editor:Research improves people's health and well-being.While it is not possible to be sure a study will produce positive results (e.g., discovering a cure or other intervention that is effective in preventing or treating a disease), it is clear that not conducting research will not allow to find ways to prevent or treat disease, or otherwise have a positive effect on people's health or well-being.Research priority-setting exercises are ne…

The landscape of Covid-19 clinical trials in Latin America and the Caribbean
A considerable number of clinical trials is being conducted globally in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including in low- and middle-income countries such as those in the Latin America and Caribbean region (LAC). Yet, an abundance of studies does not necessarily shorten the path to find safe and efficacious interventions for COVID-19. We analyze the trials for COVID-19 treatment and prevention that are registered from LAC countries in the Inte…
Clinical trial registries are one of the main sources of information concerning health research interventions that have been or are being carried out throughout the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) established a minimum data set to be recorded (20 items), which was agreed upon internationally with the stakeholders, and established a network of primary and associated records. In addition to the register ClinicalTrial.Gov (of the United S…
Twelve Years of Fogarty-Funded Bioethics Training in Latin America and the Caribbean
The landscape in research ethics has changed significantly in Latin America and the Caribbean over the past two decades. Research ethics has gone from being a largely foreign concept and unfamiliar practice to an integral and growing feature of regional health research systems. Four bioethics training programs have been funded by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) in this region in the past 12 years. Overall, they have contributed significant…
Separate Goals, Converging Priorities
Recent evidence confirming that the administration of antiretroviral drugs ( ARVs ) to HIV ‐infected persons may effectively reduce their risk of transmission has revived the discussion about priority setting in the fight against HIV / AIDS . The fact that the very same drugs can be used both for treatment purposes and for preventive purposes (Treatment as Prevention) has been seen as paradigm‐shifting and taken to spark a new controversy: In a c…
Affordability of health care
Evidence shows that women have greater difficulty than men in affording health care. But what is it to afford health care? According to the reasonable tradeoff account of affordability, individuals can afford health care if paying for it does not require them to make tradeoffs that are not reasonable—that is, if in order to pay for health care they do not have to sacrifice something as important as having one’s health covered. Unlike alternative …
Republicanism
Philip Pettit is the most important contemporany advocate of the republican tradition in political philosophy. He advances a concept of freedom as non-domination, and constrasts it with the liberal conception of freedom as non-interference. He claims that two features distinguish domination from interference: (1) The capacity of interference ( as opposed to actual interference), and (2) the fact that the interference is arbitrary. I shall argue t…
