  • Economic history of the Southern Levant in the 8th century BCE in light of the Covenant Code and Southern Levantine archaeology

    Open Access•Ndikho Mtshiselwa•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2026

This article explores the economic history of ancient Israel through the lens of the Hebrew Bible and Southern Levantine archaeology, with a focus on human rights, democracy, socio-economic justice and ethical behaviour. It investigates how the Covenant Code (CC) (Ex 21–23) and archaeological evidence from the 8th century BCE illuminate economic structures and moral concerns in the Kingdom of Judah and its neighbours. The article first discusses …

  • A prophet on the periphery

Open Access•Ndikho Mtshiselwa, Akhona Masiza•ARTICLE•HTS Teologiese Studies /…•2026

This article explores the life and legacy of Andile Madodomzi Mbete, a revered minister of religion in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA), through the lens of prophetic witness at the margins of society. Framed by the biblical motif of the ‘prophet on the periphery’ – in contrast to the court prophet of the Old Testament – and the MCSA’s enduring call for the formation of an alternative community, the study positions Mbete as a contem…

  • Psalm 72 in light of the psychological theories of poverty

    Open Access•Ndikho Mtshiselwa•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2024•Referencias: 7

Prior to the 1980s, various theories of poverty have been proposed by psychologists, ranging from, but not limited to, ‘naturalizing perspective’, ‘constitutionally inferior perspective’, or ‘nativist perspective’; to the ‘McClelland approach’ (McClelland 1961, 1965, 1973); to the ‘attribution theory’; and to Lewis’ (1975) culture of poverty theory. The theories tease out issues of the accumulated environmental deficits and psychiatric disorders,…

  • In Vino Veritas? Drunkenness and Deceit in Micah and Isaiah

    Ndikho Mtshiselwa•ARTICLE•Journal for Semitics•2018

When viewed in light of the expression, In Vino Veritas, the notion of drunkenness and deceit in the Hebrew Bible, specifically in the prophetic books of Micah and Isaiah, raises certain questions. First, is the phenomenon of In Vino Veritas present in Micah and Isaiah? Second, did Micah and Isaiah have in mind issues of unethical behaviour and social injustice in the allusions to drunkenness and deceit? This article examines the translation of M…

  • Violence and the Liberated Woman

    Ndikho Mtshiselwa, V Ndikhokele N Mtshiselwa•ARTICLE•Journal for Semitics•2017

Although it is widely argued that the Hebrew Bible contains texts which caricature violence against women, the present article shows that some biblical texts could also offer liberating possibilities to oppressed women in South Africa. The interest of this article lies in bringing Brenda Fassieâ€TMs song “Nakupenda†(I love you) into conversation with the Song of Songs in order to produce an interaction between the biblical text and an African pop…

  • Remembering and constructing Israelite identity in postexilic Yehud

    Open Access•Ndikho Mtshiselwa•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2016•Referencias: 3

That there is a growing focus and elaboration of prayers in the Old Testament scholarship on the postexilic biblical writings suggests that such prayers received an authoritative status in postexilic Yehud. Firstly, this paper argues that not only did the remembrance of the story of Israel confer an authoritative status to Nehemiah 9:6 37, it also served the purpose of casting a hopeful and prophetic imagination of a liberated community in Yehud.…

  • South African Female Presidential Leadership and the inevitability of a donga as final destination? Reading the Deuteronomistic Athaliah the bosadi way

    Open Access•Ndikho Mtshiselwa, Madipoane Masenya•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2016•Referencias: 4

In the 104 years of the existence of the African National Congress, many a black person in Sout Africa has been exclusively led by men. Also, 24 years into a democracy, patriarchy continues to raise its ugly head in our parliament, among other institutions. Disturbingly, against the call for a female presidential leadership Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the National Union of Mineworkers, together with the ANC leadership in the Gauteng province, are lob…

  • Dangling between death and hope

    Open Access•Madipoane Masenya, Ndikho Mtshiselwa•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2016•Referencias: 2

The genre of laments (both individual and communal) can be traced historically, even up to today, to periods of crisis. The psalms of lament in the Hebrew Bible point to periods both of national crisis such as wars, exile, and individual crisis, namely attacks from enemies and illness among others. The crisis of the exile was typified by death (in the literal and metaphorical sense), pestilence, disease and war. It was also typified by hope as so…

  • Narratology and Orality in African Biblical Hermeneutics

    Open Access•Ndikho Mtshiselwa•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2016•Referencias: 3

On the issue of methodology, oral literature has been decisive in the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible in Africa. For instance, Madipoane Masenya (ngwan a Mphahlele) convincingly employed the folktale of the Rabbit and the Lion in her interpretation of the Bible. That Narratology and Orality in African Biblical Hermeneutics is a rarely researched area within biblical scholarship provides room for further studies in this area. This article argue…

  • Reconstructing a Deuteronomistic Athaliah in the (South) African context

    Open Access•Ndikho Mtshiselwa•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2015•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

Angie Motshekga, the president of the Women s League of the ruling African National Congress (ANC 2014), is reported to have said that South Africa is not ready to have a female president ... What is perturbing about her statement is the presupposition that South-African society perceives women as presently incapable of leading the country as president. Given the variety of literature on female empowerment in South Africa, Motshekga s statement c…

  • The age of reinvented empire(s) in Africa in the light of Persian hegemonic power

    Open Access•Ndikho Mtshiselwa•ARTICLE•Verbum et Ecclesia•2015•Referencias: 6

It is generally accepted that historically Africa experienced colonialism. Thus, in the neocolonial age articulated by the likes of Sugirtharajah, Segovia and Nkrumah, most African countries are faced with the challenge of power struggle in which imperialism and dictatorship inhibits the development of the Two-Thirds world countries. This challenge, it is argued, reveals an imperialistic tendency of the European Union, China and African governmen…
