  • Inferring ground-level nitrogen dioxide concentrations at fine spatial resolution applied to the TROPOMI satellite instrument

Open Access•Matthew J Cooper, Matthew Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Satellite-based estimates of ground-level nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) concentrations are useful for understanding links between air quality and health. A longstanding question has been why prior satellite-derived surface NO 2 concentrations are biased low with respect to ground-based measurements. In this work we demonstrate that these biases are due to both the coarse resolution of previous satellite NO 2 products and inaccuracies in vertical mixin…

  • Inconsistencies in sulfur dioxide emissions from the Canadian oil sands and potential implications

    Open Access•C A McLinden, C Adams et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Satellite-derived and reported sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) emissions from the Canadian oil sands are shown to have been consistent up to 2013. Post-2013, these sources of emissions data diverged, with reported emissions dropping by a factor of two, while satellite-derived emissions for the region remained relatively constant, with the discrepancy (satellite-derived emissions minus reported emissions) peaking at 50 kt(SO 2 ) yr -1 around 2016. The 2013…
