  • A gigantic scheme of co-operation

    John T Flanagan, John Flanagan•ARTICLE•Labour History Review•2009•Referencias: 1

This article discusses the nature and extent of collaboration between two labour unions in the North-East which was aimed at establishing a permanent alliance in order to further perceived joint aims. Chartist-inspired, if not formally aligned to the movement, the proposed union was very much in tune with the principles of the 'Charter and Something More' espoused by G. J. Harney in 1851. Moreover, the leadership of the joint union saw that worki…

  • Deep down in the Jungle

    John T Flanagan, Roger D Abrahams•ARTICLE•Western Folklore•1966•Citada por: 22

With the growth of interest folklore, it becomes increasingly evident that the presentation of a collection needs some rationale more than the fact that traditional materials have been collected and properly annotated. Much has been gathered and is now accessible through journals, archives, and lists. If a corpus of lore is not presented some way, which bears new light on the process of word-of-mouth transmission, on traditional forms or expressi…

  • Emerson and Communism

    John T Flanagan•ARTICLE•The New England Quarterly•1937

IN the period of intellectual fermentation which was middle nineteenth-century America, Ralph Waldo Emerson was a highly interested observer and critic. To slavery, of course, he paid particular attention, and his utterances regarding what he conceived to be the greatest of all evils reveal not only a sharp insight into practical affairs but a profound hatred for servitude of every kind. In addition, he kept a keen eye on such contemporary moveme…

  • The Cult of Violence in Latin American Short Fiction

    Raymond L Grismer, John T Flanagan•ARTICLE•Hispania•1943

TO A North American reader, the short fiction of the countries to the southward has an exotic and unfamiliar tone. It is not merely that Buenos Aires supplants New York as the locale for stories of metropolitan sophistication, and that gauchos and peons replace farmers and clerks as characters. Nor is it the obvious contrast in setting, with the pampas of Argentina, the cordilleras of Chile, the tropical forests of the Chaco, the hot, indolent po…
