  • Observations of vulnerable marine ecosystems and significant adverse impacts on high seas seamounts of the northwestern Hawaiian Ridge and Emperor Seamount Chain

    Open Access•Amy R Baco, Nicole B Morgan et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2020

The Northwestern Hawaiian Ridge seamounts (NHR) outside the US EEZ and the Emperor Seamount Chain (ESC) have some of the longest history and largest takes of bottom contact fisheries of any seamounts globally. Imaging surveys from four of these seamounts provide evidence of vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) on all surveyed features including dense patches of octocorals, scleractinian reefs, and sponges. Crinoids and brisingids occurred patchily…

  • Antarctic ecosystem responses following ice‐shelf collapse and iceberg calving

    Open Access•Jeroen Ingels, Richard B Aronson et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

The calving of A‐68, the 5,800‐km 2 , 1‐trillion‐ton iceberg shed from the Larsen C Ice Shelf in July 2017, is one of over 10 significant ice‐shelf loss events in the past few decades resulting from rapid warming around the Antarctic Peninsula. The rapid thinning, retreat, and collapse of ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula are harbingers of warming effects around the entire continent. Ice shelves cover more than 1.5 million km 2 and fringe…

  • Major impacts of climate change on deep-sea benthic ecosystems

    Open Access•Andrew K Sweetman, Andrew R Thurber et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2017

The deep sea encompasses the largest ecosystems on Earth. Although poorly known, deep seafloor ecosystems provide services that are vitally important to the entire ocean and biosphere. Rising atmospheric greenhouse gases are bringing about significant changes in the environmental properties of the ocean realm in terms of water column oxygenation, temperature, pH and food supply, with concomitant impacts on deep-sea ecosystems. Projections suggest…
