  • A review of past changes in extratropical cyclones in the northern hemisphere and what can be learned for the future

    Open Access•Christoph C Raible, Joaquim G Pinto et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2021

Extratropical cyclones, a major phenomenon of the mid‐latitude atmospheric dynamics, show strong variability over a range of time scales. Future projections hint at an increase of cyclonic intensity and the associated precipitation, an important fact to be considered when developing future risk assessments. This review presents a first overview of studies which (a) puts the current variability and projected future climate changes of extratropical…

  • Tropical cloud-radiative changes contribute to robust climate change-induced jet exit strengthening over Europe during boreal winter

Open Access•Nicole Albern, Aiko Voigt et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

The North Atlantic jet stream is projected to extend eastward towards Europe in boreal winter in response to climate change. We show that this response is robust across a hierarchy of climate models and climate change scenarios. We further show that cloud-radiative changes contribute robustly to the eastward extension of the jet stream in three atmosphere models, but lead to model uncertainties in the jet stream response over the North Atlantic. …

  • The exceptional influence of storm ‘Xaver’ on design water levels in the German Bight

Open Access•Sönke Dangendorf, Arne Arns et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

Design water levels for coastal structures are usually estimated based on extreme value statistics. Since their robustness depends heavily on the sample size of observations, regular statistical updates are needed, especially after extreme events. Here, we demonstrate the exceptional influence of such an event based on storm 'Xaver', which caused record breaking water levels for large parts of the southwestern German North Sea coastline on 6 Dece…

  • Return periods of losses associated with European windstorm series in a changing climate

    Open Access•Melanie K Karremann, Joaquim G Pinto et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2014

Possible future changes of clustering and return periods (RPs) of European storm series with high potential losses are quantified. Historical storm series are identified using 40 winters of reanalysis. Time series of top events (1, 2 or 5 year return levels (RLs)) are used to assess RPs of storm series both empirically and theoretically. Additionally, 800 winters of general circulation model simulations for present (1960–2000) and future (2060–21…

  • Past and recent changes in the North Atlantic oscillation

    Open Access•Joaquim G Pinto, Christoph C Raible•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2011•Referencias: 4

The North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) is under current climate conditions the leading mode of atmospheric circulation variability over the North Atlantic region. While the pattern is present during the entire year, it is most important during winter, explaining a large part of the variability of the large‐scale pressure field, being thus largely determinant for the weather conditions over the North Atlantic basin and over Western Europe. In this s…
