  • Experiences of healthcare for people living with multiple sclerosis and their healthcare professionals

Open Access•Eluned Price, Robyn Lucas et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2021

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative condition of the central nervous system that commonly strikes in young adulthood and has no cure. Many people living with MS (PwMS) will have significant contact with a range of healthcare professionals (HCPs). To achieve optimal health outcomes in MS, it is important to understand factors that contribute to positive or negative healthcare experiences. Previous st…

  • The Potential of Ultraviolet Radiation Meters in Secondary Schools as a Sun Protection Intervention Mechanism for Adolescents

Open Access•Simone Pettigrew, Ashleigh Parnell et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The aim of this pilot study was to assess whether the installation of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) meters in secondary schools has the potential to improve adolescents' sun protection-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours and reduce their exposure to UVR during school hours. Data were collected from students at two schools via online pre- and post-intervention surveys, measurement of sunscreen usage, polysulfone UVR exposure badges, and pho…

  • Prevalence and Predictors of Vitamin D Deficiency among African Immigrants Living in Australia

    Open Access•Kahlea Horton-French, Eleanor Dunlop et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Vitamin D deficiency (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations n = 236). Serum 25(OH)D was measured using a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method that is certified to international reference measurement procedures. Poisson regression was used to investigate independent predictors of vitamin D deficiency. A total of 36% of adults were vitamin D deficient (35% of men, 37% of women). The prevalence ratio (PR) of vitamin D d…

  • Ozone depletion, ultraviolet radiation, climate change and prospects for a sustainable future

    Open Access•Paul W Barnes, Craig E Williamson et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Sustainability•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

  • On the Nature of Evidence and ‘Proving’ Causality

    Open Access•Robyn Lucas, Rachael M Rodney Harris•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

If environmental exposures are shown to cause an adverse health outcome, reducing exposure should reduce the disease risk. Links between exposures and outcomes are typically based on 'associations' derived from observational studies, and causality may not be clear. Randomized controlled trials to 'prove' causality are often not feasible or ethical. Here the history of evidence that tobacco smoking causes lung cancer-from observational studies-is …

  • Sun protection to improve vaccine effectiveness in children in a high ambient ultraviolet radiation and rural environment

    Open Access•Caradee Y Wright, Patricia N Albers et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

This is the first intervention study to assess the effect of sun protection measures on vaccine effectiveness in a rural, real-world setting. The novel design and rural setting of the study can contribute much needed evidence to better understand sun exposure and protection, as well as factors determining vaccine effectiveness in rural Africa, and inform the design of immunisation programmes. (TRN PACTCR201611001881114, 24 November 2016, retrospe…

  • My child did not like using sun protection’

Open Access•Zamantimande Kunene, Patricia N Albers et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

Among Black Africans in rural northern South Africa, we found a mismatch between parental preferences and child acceptance for using sun protection when outdoors. A better understanding of the health risks of incidental excess sun exposure and potential benefits of sun protection is required among Black Africans

  • Investigating the patterns and determinants of seasonal variation in vitamin D status in Australian adults

Open Access•Laura King, Keith Dear et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

We report the study design and cohort description for the Seasonal D Study. The study has collected a wealth of data to examine inter- and intra-individual seasonal variation in vitamin D status and serum 25(OH)D levels in Australian adults

  • Comparing the effects of sun exposure and vitamin D supplementation on vitamin D insufficiency, and immune and cardio-metabolic function

Open Access•Mica Hartley, Samuel Hoare et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Australia New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry: ACTRN12613000290796 Registered 14 March 2013

  • Will Global Climate Change Alter Fundamental Human Immune Reactivity

Open Access•Ashwin Swaminathan, Robyn Lucas et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2014

The human immune system is an interface across which many climate change sensitive exposures can affect health outcomes. Gaining an understanding of the range of potential effects that climate change could have on immune function will be of considerable importance, particularly for child health, but has, as yet, received minimal research attention. We postulate several mechanisms whereby climate change sensitive exposures and conditions will subt…
