Association of mortality and combined oxidative capacity of ozone and nitrogen dioxide
Projections of dengue epidemics attributable to climate change in Peru
BACKGROUND: Climate change is expected to influence the risk of mosquito-borne diseases by altering mosquito and pathogen ecology. However, the potential impact of climate change on dengue epidemics has rarely been investigated in Peru. In this study, we projected future dengue epidemics in Peru under various climate change scenarios. METHODS: We analysed 526 033 reported dengue cases from 15 Peruvian states (2016-2023). Using quasi-Poisson time-…
Projection of temperature-related severe injuries under climate change
This nationwide study indicates that the temperature rise under the climate change scenario may contribute to an increase in the future burden of injuries in South Korea, particularly transport injuries and injuries due to contact with chemicals or other substances. Our findings may be informative for public health policies aiming at alleviating the health burden in the context of global warming
Association of ambient temperatures with suicide attempts and violence with the future projections under climate change scenarios
The nationwide study about South Korea shows that there are associations between an increase in outdoor temperatures and increased risks of suicide attempts and violence, and each excess injury related to temperature is projected to grow under the SSP scenarios. Our findings might provide informative evidence for relevant action plans against climate change and intentional injuries
Ischemic heart disease mortality due to fine particulate matter in Seoul between 2016 and 2020
Our study assessed the burden of IHD mortality attributable to ambient PM 2.5 and the potential health benefits associated with its reduction in Seoul between 2016 and 2020. The findings suggest that continued efforts to reduce PM 2.5 concentrations could significantly mitigate IHD mortality, particularly in the context of an aging population
Associations of ambient exposure to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene with daily mortality
Ozone-related acute excess mortality projected to increase in the absence of climate and air quality controls consistent with the Paris Agreement
Summer temperature and emergency room visits due to urinary tract infection in South Korea
Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that higher summer temperatures increase the risk of severe UTIs, and the risk might be different by sub-populations
Short-term exposure to outdoor nitrogen dioxide and respiratory mortality, with high-risk populations
Numerous existing studies reported the negative impacts of outdoor nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) on respiratory mortality. However, the evidence of related high-risk populations was considerably limited, especially associated with ages, causes of death, and district-level characteristics. In addition, most earlier studies were based on monitored areas, thus previous risk estimates of NO 2 could be biased to provide nationwide risk estimates and high-r…
The overlooked health impacts of extreme rainfall exposure in 30 East Asian cities
Excess mortality and the Covid-19 pandemic
No evidence of a substantial increase in all-cause mortality was found during the 2020 pandemic period in South Korea, as a result of a large decrease in deaths related to respiratory diseases that offset increased mortality from metabolic disease and diseases of ill-defined cause. The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected those of lower socioeconomic status and has exacerbated inequalities in mortality
Suicide rate and social environment characteristics in South Korea
This study investigated the complex role of social environments on suicide rate in South Korea and revealed that higher suicide rates were associated with lower values of socioeconomic status, physical exercise, and religious activities, and with higher social isolation and smoking practice. Our results can be used in the development of targeted suicide prevention policies
Global, regional, and national burden of mortality associated with non-optimal ambient temperatures from 2000 to 2019
BACKGROUND: Exposure to cold or hot temperatures is associated with premature deaths. We aimed to evaluate the global, regional, and national mortality burden associated with non-optimal ambient temperatures. METHODS: In this modelling study, we collected time-series data on mortality and ambient temperatures from 750 locations in 43 countries and five meta-predictors at a grid size of 0·5° × 0·5° across the globe. A three-stage analysis strategy…
The burden of heat-related mortality attributable to recent human-induced climate change
Climate change affects human health; however, there have been no large-scale, systematic efforts to quantify the heat-related human health impacts that have already occurred due to climate change. Here, we use empirical data from 732 locations in 43 countries to estimate the mortality burdens associated with the additional heat exposure that has resulted from recent human-induced warming, during the period 1991-2018. Across all study countries, w…
Effects of Asian dust-derived particulate matter on ST-elevation myocardial infarction
Reducing PM 2.5 and PM 10 emissions, particularly during the days of Asian dust, may be crucial and reduce STEMI and AMI incidence among < 65-year-olds. These results indicate that the Asian dust alarm system needs revision to protect vulnerable populations
Heatwave-Related Mortality Risk and the Risk-Based Definition of Heat Wave in South Korea
Studies on the pattern of heatwave mortality using nationwide data that include rural areas are limited. This study aimed to assess the risk of heatwave-related mortality and evaluate the health risk-based definition of heatwave. We collected data on daily temperature and mortality from 229 districts in South Korea in 2011-2017. District-specific heatwave-related mortality risks were calculated using a distributed lag model. The estimates were po…
