A New Late Gravettian Mammoth Bone Deposit in Bukov, Ústí nad Labem, North Bohemia
Mammoth hunting and the exploitation of mammoth resources is one of the most characteristic features of the Gravettian culture in Central Europe. The exact nature of the mammoth-human relationship has been a subject of scientific debate since the first excavations of mammoth bone deposits in the 19th century. The newly discovered Late Gravettian bone deposit in Ústí nad Labem, North Bohemia, Czech Republic, not only shifts this archaeological phe…
Early Net Fishing at the Epipaleolithic Site of Jordan River Dureijat, Upper Jordan River, Israel
For more than 10,000 years (~ 20,000–10,000 BP), human groups repeatedly returned to the southern edge of Paleo-lake Hula in the Upper Jordan Valley to exploit aquatic resources at the Epipaleolithic site of Jordan River Dureijat (JRD). Previous research has emphasized line fishing based on bone fishhooks and line weights. Here, we document additional fishing methods revealed by the systematic use of limestone cobbles as net sinkers. The limeston…
Tracking the Hunter
This study presents an analysis of a small cluster of blades/bladelets discovered during a rescue excavation at the Middle/Late Gravettian site of Milovice IV, Czech Republic. The cluster is comprised of 29 artefacts, both retouched and unretouched. The specific context suggests that the items were originally bundled together in a container made of a perishable material. The artefacts were made from raw materials of diverse origins. Techno-typolo…
Function of Jasper and Flint Microliths at the Malý Faraon Mesolithic Rock Shelter. An Experimental Approach
From hunting implements to more versatile tools, the function of Mesolithic microliths have been questioned for a long time. Extensive experiments have contributed to a more nuanced understanding of fractures and other microscopic traces that are diagnostic of impacts on flint tools. In the northern Bohemian Mesolithic, raw materials are diverse with jasper representing an important source at some sites. In this study, we tested whether fractures…
Cold Neutron Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis—a Non‐destructive Method for Characterization of High Silica Content Chipped Stone Tools and Raw Materials
Recently, several archaeometrical projects have been started on the prehistoric collection of the Hungarian National Museum. Among the analytical methods applied, non‐destructive prompt gamma activation analysis has a special importance. We have also tested the potential of this method on chipped stone tools, with the aim of determining their exact provenance. On the basis of major and trace element components, characterizations of stone tools an…
