Does the framing of environmental ethics matter for the effectiveness of environmental education? Evidence from field experiments in elementary schools
The importance of environmental ethics is broadly acknowledged in environmental education. Nevertheless, little is known about whether differences in teachers' framing of ethical perspectives can lead to significant differences in outcomes. This study addresses this gap through field experiments evaluating the short-term impact of classes on local conservation issues among students and their parents in 21 public elementary schools in Kushiro, Jap…
Distribution of and Environmental Factors Influencing Giant Japanese Horse Chestnut Tree Stands in Common Village Land in Shiga Prefecture, Central Japan
Giant Japanese horse chestnut (Aesculus turbinata Blume) stands formed in the mountain forests in Japan, and the environmental and social factors influencing the formation of such stands on common land were investigated in this study, which examined the interactions between physical conditions and local forest use. Additionally, this study aimed to identify the similarities and differences in the factors influencing giant A. turbinata forest form…

Economic inequality expanded after an extreme climate event
The importance of ending poverty and reducing economic inequality has been explicitly recognized globally. Climate extremes are a critical global risk and can lead to economic damages, but empirical evidence of their effects on economic inequality is limited. Here, we focus on Mongolian pastoralism, which has a coupled socio-ecological system, to examine the trend of economic inequality among herders following a climate extreme event. Mongolia ex…
Changes in Local Knowledge and Agricultural Practices through the Introduction of New Agricultural Methods in North-central Namibia
(Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development: SATREPS)
Current Issues and Prospects for Social Ecological Systems in Africa
Analysing the origin of rain- and subsurface water in seasonal wetlands of north-central Namibia
We investigated the origins of rain- and subsurface waters of north-central Namibia’s seasonal wetlands, which are critical to the region’s water and food security. The region includes the southern part of the Cuvelai system seasonal wetlands (CSSWs) of the Cuvelai Basin, a transboundary river basin covering southern Angola and northern Namibia. We analysed stable water isotopes (SWIs) of hydrogen (HDO) and oxygen (H _2 ^18 O) in rainwater, surfa…
The transitions of vegetation and tree utilization by Ovambo agro-pastoralists in Northern Namibia
In the arid region in Southern Africa, the vegetation is rapidly change by human activities. The Ovambo agro-pastoralists in semi-arid Northern Namibia utilize trees for various purposes. The changing vegetation is influencing back to the Ovambo's lives, and new methods for utilization of timber are emerging. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the mutual transition of regional vegetation and timber utilization by Ovambo agro-pastoralists in …
