Modelling of the Mid–Late Holocene coastline variations of the Ras al-Jinz site (Sultanate of Oman) using UAV technology photogrammetry, electromagnetic survey, and sedimentary archives
Late Holocene morphosedimentary and palaeoenvironmental study of the Middle Drâa river basin (southeastern Morocco)
Deep learning ancient map segmentation to assess historical landscape changes
Ancient geographical maps are our window into the past for understanding the spatial dynamics of last centuries. This paper proposes a novel approach to address this problem using deep learning. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are today the state-of-the-art methods in handling a variety of problems in the fields of image processing. The Cassini map, created in the eighteenth century, is used to illustrate our methodology. This approach enabl…
Holocene molluscan succession and paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the upper Moulouya basin
Early human impact on soils and hydro-sedimentary systems
We analysed the late-Holocene pedo-sedimentary archives of La Narse de la Sauvetat, a hydromorphic depression in the southern Limagne plain (central France), where chronologically accurate studies are scarce. The multi-proxy geoarchaeological and palaeoenvironmental analysis of two cores from different areas of the basin was carried out through sedimentological, geochemical, micromorphological and malacological investigations. Integration of thes…
Holocene demographic fluctuations, climate and erosion in the Mediterranean
As part of the Changing the Face of the Mediterranean Project, we consider how human pressure and concomitant erosion has affected a range of Mediterranean landscapes between the Neolithic and, in some cases, the post-medieval period. Part of this assessment comprises an investigation of relationships among palaeodemographic data, evidence for vegetation change and some consideration of rapid climate change events. The erosion data include recent…
Holocene land cover and population dynamics in Southern France
This paper describes long-term changes in human population and vegetation cover in southern France, using summed radiocarbon probability distributions and site count data as population proxies and information from fossil pollen cores as a proxy for past land cover. Southern France is particularly well-suited to this type of study as a result of previous programmes of intensive survey work and excavation in advance of large-scale construction. The…
Characterization and quantification of Holocene colluvial and alluvial sediments in the Valdaine Region (southern France)
This study presents a Holocene sediment budget for the Valdaine Region, located at the edge of the southern French Pre-Alps. Holocene colluvial and alluvial deposition are quantified based on existing and new field data. Average sediment thickness values were calculated for different landscape units, and available chronological data were used to make a time-differentiated sediment budget. Total Holocene colluvial deposition in the Valdaine (334 k…
Vegetation history of chernozems in the Czech Republic
Games on the seashore of Salalah
During the 2013 fieldwork of the French archaeological mission along the shores of the Arabian Sea, mancala games were discovered on the seashore of Salalah at the site of Ad-Dahariz. They are cup-hole carvings made directly into rock slabs and distributed in six distinct zones of the site. They usually consist of fourteen cup-holes aligned in two lines of seven, two supplementary holes being sometimes present on each side. They are the first of …
An integrated socio-environmental approach to the study of ancient water systems
Quantifying the anthropogenic forcing on soil erosion during the Iron Age and Roman Period in southeastern France
Evolution and management of humid landscapes in northern Dauphiné (Rhone valley, France)
Using various archaeological and geoarchaeological operations, charcoal and waterlogged wood assemblages have been sampled in the marshy areas from the lower Dauphiné (Rhone valley, France). Their identification allows reconstructing the evolution of the woody vegetation in relation to climatohydrological changes and with human practices in the plain since the mid Holocene. It appears that humid-land forests have experienced a shift from ash form…
Land-use changes and environmental dynamics in the upper Rhone valley since Neolithic times inferred from sediments in Lac Moras
Lac Moras is a small lake located on a low-elevation plateau in the upper Rhône Valley (304 m a.s.l.). The upper 5 m of accumulated sediment in the lake span 7500 years and offer a detailed record of environmental perturbations and land-use history at a local scale. A multiproxy analysis (pollen, charcoal and geochemical parameters) led to the establishment of four periods of landscape dynamics. The first evidence of human impacts was recorded du…

Environment and landscape management during the Middle Neolithic in Southern France
The 8200calBP abrupt environmental change and the Neolithic transition
Phytolith assemblages as a promising tool for reconstructing Mediterranean Holocene vegetation
The reliability of phytolith assemblage analysis for characterizing Mediterranean vegetation is investigated in this study. Phytolith assemblages are extracted from modern and buried Holocene soils from the middle Rhône valley (France). The relation between modern phytolith assemblages and the surrounding vegetation, as well as between fossil assemblages and contemporaneous vegetation, already reconstructed through other proxies, is discussed. We…
