The Water Origins of Brazil’s Nuclear Energy Infrastructure
Today, Brazil relies on nuclear energy for three per cent of its energy needs while hydroelectricity accounts for over sixty per cent. However, Brazilian officials sought to aggressively incorporate nuclear energy into the country’s energy infrastructure at any cost in the second half of the twentieth century. This article examines the connections between hydroelectric and nuclear energy development between 1960 and 1985. I argue that water resou…

Before the Flood
During their military dictatorship (1964–85), the Brazilian government constructed the world’s largest hydroelectric dam on the Paraná River between Brazil and Paraguay. In the process, the project flooded 1,350 square kilometers of inhabited land to create the dam’s reservoir, displacing some forty thousand rural citizens. Jacob Blanc’s Before the Flood: The Itaipu Dam and the Visibility of Rural Brazil shows how farmer, landless, and Indigenous…
Modern Brazil
Only eighty years ago, Brazil was a predominantly agrarian society, but today most Brazilians live in an urban environment. By heavily focusing on the twenty-first century, Herbert S. Klein and Francisco Vidal Luna’s book moves beyond many traditional general histories to examine how this major transition affected the day-to-day lives of average Brazilians in these cities. Klein and Luna argue that Brazil’s transformation into an urban society un…
The Street Is Ours
There were streets long before cars. Shawn William Miller's The Street Is Ours: Community, the Car, and the Nature of Public Space in Rio de Janeiro explores how the invasion of cars changed the street's meaning. Streets once were the manifestation of culture, a three-dimensional space to do, be, exist, work, play, and more. They were a public good for all (p. 8). Through an examination of the evolution of popular streets in twentieth-century Rio…
“More Brazilian Than Cachaça”
Today, Brazil has one of the most diverse energy systems in the world. The sugar-based ethanol industry plays a pivotal role in that achievement, yet scholars of energy development have focused little on ethanol. This article examines the history of the sugar-based ethanol industry from its beginning in the 1930s to the creation of the state-led program Proálcool (the National Ethanol Program) in 1975 and the ethanol-fueled car in 1979. This arti…
The Demise of the Brazilian Ethanol Program
Once the height of the Brazilian military dictatorship’s alternative energy agenda in the 1980s, the National Ethanol Program (Proálcool) was dismantled as a fuel replacement program in 1990 by the new democratically elected administration. This article traces the demise of the large-scale Brazilian ethanol program as the country transitioned from authoritarian rule to democratic governance between 1985 and 1990. Traditional analyses of the progr…
