The Kinship Terminology of the Adi of Arunachal Pradesh (Padam and Minyong)
This paper describes the kinship system of the Adi of Arunachal Pradesh (Padam and Minyong subgroups), focusing on its kin terminology. This system corresponds to the Omaha model defined by Lévi-Strauss, marked by generational skewing and only proscriptive matrimonial rules. It is also characterised by a remarkable profusion of terms of address indicating birth order. A comparison with the Mising system provides an opportunity to challenge some c…
The Kinship Terminology of the Dimasa
Most languages of the Bodo-Garo cluster of the Tibeto-Burman family exhibit kinship terminologies that are built upon the principle of seniority and incorporate terminological equivalences between agnatic kin of alternate generations. Interestingly, the latter feature does not appear to be shared by any other language of the Sino-Tibetan family. To find a similar intricate pattern of self-reciprocity between consanguineal relatives of different g…

The social organisation of the Na of China is exceptional in that marriage occupies a marginal place and the concept of kinship appears to be absent. This poses fundamental questions for the anthropology of kinship. For Cai Hua this puts into question the universality of marriage, Radcliffe-Brown's definition of the elementary family, and Lévi-Strauss' theory of alliance. The article is based on the theoretical presupposition which interprets the…
The Relationship between Society and Nature among the Hani People of China
With a total population of approximately one and a half million people, the Hani tribes are comprised of some twenty subgroups (the Lopi, Goxo, Zalo, Yiche, Akha, etc.), each of which possesses its own distinct identity and speaks one of the Tibeto-Burman languages. Most of this population is centered between the middle courses of the Red and Mekong rivers of China; smaller groups can be found inhabiting areas bordering on Vietnam, Burma, Laos, a…
