Walpole Island, a Canadian Indian reserve located in the St. Clair River delta 30 miles northeast of Detroit, Michigan, was the setting for a significant religious debate between two Ojibwa Indians leaders and a Jesuit missionary on 31 July 1844. The geographical setting for this community is an old buffalo wallow, the glaize, at present Defiance, Ohio. In 1792, the locale became the headquarters for the militant Indian confederacy protesting White encroachment on Indian land northwest of the Ohio River.
