  • Determining Gold Thickness in Multilayer Samples by Measuring the Intensity Ratio of the Au-Lα/Fe-Kα X-Ray

Open Access•Giovanni Buccolieri, Roberto Cesareo et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•Referencias: 1

Multilayer samples are used in a wide range of sectors for their functionality. In the field of cultural heritage, multilayer samples are also common, as in the case of gilded or silvered alloys in the pigment layers in paintings. The X-ray ratios Lα/Lβ, Kα/Kβ, or K/L for an element or for different elements in a multilayer sample depend on the chemical composition and thickness of the superimposed layers and on the chemical composition and thick…

  • Studies and Considerations on Forty-Three Gold and Silver Nose Ornaments from the Moche Tomb of the Lady of Cao

Open Access•G Gigante, Roberto Cesareo et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•Referencias: 2

The authors studied forty-three beautiful nose ornaments from the Moche tomb of the Lady of Cao, located in the north of Peru, which has been dated to be around 300–400 d.C. Of these items, thirty-nine are composed of a sheet of gold alloy joined together in various manners to a silver alloy sheet, which provides a strong contrast at their interface. Two nose ornaments are on gold alloy and two on silver alloy. These nose ornaments were studied u…

  • Gold leafs in 14th century Florentine painting

Open Access•Giovanni Buccolieri, Alessandro Buccolieri et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2009

Gold leafs are typically present in paintings and frescoes of the Italian Renaissance in the 13th and 14th centuries. The chemical composition and thickness of gold leafs provide important information toward a better understanding of the technology of that epoch. The present paper discusses the results of non-destructive analysis carried out with a portable energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF) equipment on the 14th century panel Annuncia…

  • Pre-Columbian alloys from the royal tombs of Sipán and from the Museum of Sicán

Open Access•Roberto Cesareo, Ángel Bustamante et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2009•Referencias: 1

On the north coast of present-day Peru, approximately between 50 and 700 AD, flourished the Moche civilization. It was an advanced culture, and the Moche were sophisticated metalsmiths. The Moche metal working ability was impressively shown by the excavations of the “Tumbas Reales de Sipán”, discovered by W. Alva and co-workers in 1987.The Sicán culture is a successive civilization (750-1375 AD) which extended as far as present day Piura in the n…

  • Study o f archaeological pottery from Paraná State em ploying nuclear non destructive techniques

  • Analysis of Silver Objects by Scattering and by X‐ray Fluorescence of Monoenergetic Gamma‐rays

    Open Access•Roberto Cesareo, M FERRETTI et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1982•Referencias: 4

  • Non‐destructive Analysis of Chemical Elements in Paintings and Enamels

    Open Access•Roberto Cesareo, F V FRAZZOLI et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1972•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

S X‐ray fluorescence analysis is a non‐destructive method, very useful for qualitative and quantitative determination of chemical elements in paintings, frescoes, enamels, etc. Measurements have been carried out on ancient Persian mural painting allowing the identification of about ten different pigments. Furthermore, many oil paintings have been examined. For example, about thirty regions of different colour tonalities concerning the ‘Deposizion…
