Background: Aquincum as the capital of Pannonia Inferior was once part of the Roman Empire. The human population here was a mixture of romanized autochton tribes and immigrants from across the Empire. Excavations carried out in several parts of the settlement complex of Aquincum (legionary fortress, Military and Civil Towns, villa estates) have so far revealed 250 complete or fragmentary hand querns and millstones of different types. Decorated Pinctada Margaritifera
A fragment of a large decorated bi-valve shell was found in the so-called “Diana-sanctuary” (building nr. XXVI) during the excavation carried out by late E. Márity in 1993. The valve is decorated with running animals. Due to the tragic death of the excavator, the object has never been evaluated or published.
