A Very British Phenomenon? Industrial Politics and the Decline of the Japanese Coal Mining Industry Since the 1950s
This paper describes how the Japanese government gradually abandoned its support for coal mining after 1945. Drawing parallels with the British experience during the 1930s, this article shows how coal miners and owners in Japan were able to slow the pace of economic adjustment from the 1950s. The government's initial reluctance to act reflected its willingness to put industrial politics to the fore, preferring to avoid alienating political suppor…

Party Politics, Political Economy and British Protectionism, 1919–1932
Recent consideration of the proximate causes of Britain's fiscal turnaround in 1932 has given rise to two polarized views. The adoption of the tariff is seen on the one hand as the almost inevitable outcome of mounting protectionist pressures in the post‐1918 period, and on the other as a direct reaction to the economic and financial crises generated by the world depression. This article undertakes a further review of the commercial policy debate…

Keynesian Policy and British Unemployment in the 1930s
Tn a recent survey in this Review Glynn and Booth suggest that the much proclaimed 'End of the Keynesian Era' cast doubts on the ability of established theories to explain not only the problems of the contemporary world but also, by extension, those of the interwar period.' They condemn the simple and crude Keynesian analysis of deficient aggregate demand for having neglected the essentially structural and regional dimensions of the problem and f…

Unemployment and the School-Leaving Age in Inter-War Britain
As would be expected, the emphasis in existing accounts of the debate over the appropriate school-leaving age in inter-war Britain has been predominantly educational. The important discussions relate to the parliamentary and administrative struggles over the relationship between elementary and secondary schooling, with all its implications for central-and local-government finance, to the conflicts over the nature of any extended educational provi…

Juvenile Unemployment and Public Policy between the Wars
Juvenile Unemployment between the Wars
B ENJAMIN and Kochin, startled by parts of my recent and otherwise excellent article, have accused me of having led the issue astray primarily because they are convinced that the record of juvenile unemployment was remarkable in its superior, not inferior, performance. The substance of their Comment does not, in my opinion, justify them in striking such a revisionist pose, principally because the reasoning they advance in support of their argumen…

Geographical Change and Industrial Revolution
The economic changes of the industrial revolution came to different parts of England at different times. By examining the geography of these changes, this book shows how the pattern of production in an important coalfield changed as it became part of the regional economic system developing around the port of Liverpool. In the first part of the book the author develops a model for studying the geography of economic change by combining the economic…
