  • Emphasis spread in Arabic

Open Access•Muath Algazo, Bilal Alsharif et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2026

This study examines emphasis spread (ES) in Urban Jordanian Arabic (UJA), focusing on the phonological and phonetic mechanisms that govern its direction and domain. Emphasis, realized through tongue root retraction, affects both consonants and vowels and can propagate bidirectionally within the phonological word. Using autosegmental phonology, feature geometry, and Optimality Theory (OT), this research identifies coronal emphatics (/tʕ, dʕ, sʕ, ð…

    Open Access•Alalddin A Al-Tarawneh, Mohammed Al-Badawi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Language Teaching and…•2026

This study seeks to examine the effects of the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted tools (ChatGPT and DeepL) on the quality of legal translation outputs by Jordanian undergraduates. As legal translation necessitates a high degree of specificity, context, and accuracy in the utilization of terminology, the following research will explore whether AI can help students accomplish this requirement. • An Optimality-Theoretic Account of Superheavy Syllables in Urban Irbid Dialect

Open Access•Bilal Alsharif, Razan Khasawneh et al.•ARTICLE•Theory and Practice in Language…•2025

This study investigates the distribution of superheavy syllables in Urban Irbid dialect (UID), revealing their occurrence in both non-final and final word positions. We argue that word-final superheavy syllables are characterized by an extrametrical or weightless final consonant. This extrametricality is proposed as a mechanism to satisfy constraints against trimoraic syllables (*3μ) and final consonants bearing weight (*FINAL-μ-C), albeit at the…

  • Arabic Profession-Denoting Nouns and Gender

Open Access•Mamdouh A Alenazy, Yazan Shaker Almahameed et al.•ARTICLE•Theory and Practice in Language…•2024

The goal of this paper is to present a minimalist feature-based analysis that captures the verbal agreement triggered by female referent profession-denoting nouns in Modern Standard Arabic. In this language, nouns are classified as masculine or feminine based on the natural gender of their referents. Masculine nouns trigger masculine agreement on verbs, whereas feminine nouns trigger feminine agreement. However, some profession-denoting nouns are…

  • Forms and functions of jokes disseminated during the Covid-19 pandemic in Jordan

    Open Access•Ahmad Tawalbeh, Rula Abu-Elrob et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Humour Research•2023•Referencias: 7

People in Jordan have suffered the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Jordanian government took some pre-emptive measures to curb the spread of the virus, including the announcement of indefinite curfew and nationwide strict lockdown. Humorous texts appear to be the people’s key to escape from life stress, minimise the pressure of unpleasant situations and increase pleasure. Jordanian humour attracts our attention to find out what it does duri…

  • The Role of Empathy in Jordanian Medical Encounters

    Rula Abu-Elrob, Rula Ahmad Mahmoud Abu-Elrob•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2022

Patients' satisfaction with their clinical visits is a common indicator of the latter's success. Their satisfaction is then reflected in the outcomes of the visit as satisfied patients are more likely to accept their doctor's diagnosis, treatment suggestions, and advice, as well as trust their future arrangements. In addition, this satisfaction then provides doctors with insight into the effectiveness of empathizing with patients and in terms of …
