On gravity and geography
This paper critically examines the contested and uneven ways in which societies confront, manipulate and leverage gravity. In human geography, gravity has been conceptualised as a constant benign force. Implicit in geographical thinking, rarely has it been made explicit to the formation of complex socio-spatial relationships. Grounded in post-humanist, post-phenomenological thought, this paper develops an ontopolitical account, emphasising gravit…
On the politics of movement
A close but unrecognised affinity exists between border movements and dance. The paper introduces choreography as a tool of analysis for investigating how movement shapes and is shaped by the apparatus of territorial security. It builds on dance theorist André Lepecki's concepts of choreopolice and choreopolitics, developed through his reading of Jacques Rancière, and reinterprets them within the US–Mexico border context. Lepecki's thinking is ad…
Scoring dark ecologies
In 2023 and 2024, we engaged in a collaborative dance project in Cambois, England, a coastal village with a contested history. The research involved movement workshops with a community group responding to creative instructions called 'scores' that conceived and improvised novel relationships with the coast via seaweed. Informed by geographical thinking on dark ecologies and multispecies relations, we explored how spending time with, and attending…
Spectacle of Endings
This Introduction to the special issue on “Creative Endings” thinks across intensities and temporalities to consider the force of “endings” in the contemporary political moment: the multiple timespaces within them, endings as temporalities in their own right, experienced forcefully, unequally, and as generative of dynamic emotional resonances. Whilst often stated, endings remain under-theorised in the discipline. Yet endings are a central form th…
Opening Up Endings
Endings take multiple forms yet remain under theorised within geography. Informed by Hannah Arendt’s assertion that action has no end, this paper argues for the resonances and elaborations of endings, providing evidence from dance choreography. As an art form, dance has been variously conceived as ephemeral but also transient, thus neither capable of being lost nor destroyed. I explore these ideas through Renail Basail’s re/staging of the choreog…
Embodying vertical geopolitics
Thinking Intimate Geopolitics Creatively
Testimony has featured as a defining framework for post-Apartheid South Africa in traditional courts of law and under the guise of Truth and Reconciliation. Yet South Africa’s effort to transition to postviolence must be read as partial, with rates of gender-based violence amongst some of the highest in the world. The article traces the convergence between performance and testimony. It examines creative efforts to respond to South Africa’s cult o…
Mapping microbial stories
Consistent implementation of hand‐washing within the hospital environment remains a challenge in infection prevention ( IP ) procedures. IP is one of a number of measures to tackle antimicrobial resistance ( AMR ). A cross‐disciplinary team was assembled to experiment with different ways of visualising the microbial. The paper details a comparative experimental design where nurses ( n = 2) performed a series of routine care procedures in a mock‐w…
The art of parachuting
The emergence of air power as the pre‐eminent method of warfare prompted a decision, made at the highest level, to form a new arm of the British military. The Central Landing Establishment was founded as parachuting headquarters in 1940, and tasked with developing and implementing the means for training and delivering airborne forces to the ground. With woeful shortfalls in aerial knowledge, experimentation proved crucial. The paper examines the …
Micro‐bodily mobilities
This paper examines the mobile and embodied geographies of four able‐bodied dancers following their artistic encounters with disability in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Uniquely, I work with the dancing body to examine the differentiated experiences of mobility, and to uncover the performative role of the able body in unravelling assumptions around the skills and artistry of disability dance. Empirical research developed in response to a choreographic d…
Dance and wellbeing in Vancouver’s ‘A Healthy City for All’
Creativity
In an age when creativity is being extolled as the ‘oil of the twenty first century’ (p. 6) – driver of international policy, redeemer of the economy and pioneer of community – now, more than ever
A choreographic notebook
This article develops the dancers' choreographic notebook as a cross-disciplinary documentational device in the representation and analysis of multi-sensual qualitative sources. Drawing upon fieldwork collected during a London-based research placement with the dance company BalletBoyz, I endeavour to extend critical debates around the body and performance within human geography to examine the 'more-than-representational' methodological possibilit…
