  • Beyond the Urban Heat Island

Open Access•Lahouari Bounoua, Niama Boukachaba et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2025

Urbanization has accelerated globally, with the proportion of people living in cities increasing from 43% in 1990 to 56% today. This rapid urban growth profoundly affects Earth’s surface climate by altering land surface characteristics and energy fluxes. Using Landsat–MODIS data fusion to characterize land use in a biophysical model, this study assesses the global thermal impact of urbanization through two complementary metrics: the Urban Heat Is…

  • The Urban Archipelago Effect

    Open Access•Lahouari Bounoua, Tao Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2025•Referencias: 1

We model and describe the combined effect of a series of urban heat islands (UHIs), generated by nearby cities aligned as an archipelago, on the vertical diffusion of heat and the temperature structure in the lower atmosphere over an urban chain in northwestern Morocco. We use the Weather and Forecasting Model (WRF) coupled to an urban canopy model to run simulations during the northern summer. We show that when the land surface is characterized …

  • Urban Sustainability Development in Morocco, a Review

Open Access•Lahouari Bounoua, Mohamed Amine Lachkham et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2024

During the last decades, Morocco has recorded substantial urbanization and faced challenges related to urban sprawl and encroachment on fertile lands. This paper reviews several studies assessing urban sustainability development in 27 Moroccan urban areas using the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 11.3.1, i.e., the ratio of Land Consumption Rate (LCR) to Population Growth Rate (PGR). Among the 27 urban areas reviewed, analysis of…

  • Cities Exacerbate Climate Warming

    Open Access•Lahouari Bounoua, Kurtis J Thome et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2021•Referencias: 2

Urbanization is a complex land transformation not explicitly resolved within large-scale climate models. Long-term timeseries of high-resolution satellite data are essential to characterize urbanization within land surface models and to assess its contribution to surface temperature changes. The potential for additional surface warming from urbanization-induced land use change is investigated and decoupled from that due to change in climate over …

  • A Method for Mapping Future Urbanization in the United States

    Open Access•Lahouari Bounoua, Joseph Nigro et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2018•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 1

Cities are poised to absorb additional people. Their sustainability, or ability to accommodate a population increase without depleting resources or compromising future growth, depends on whether they harness the efficiency gains from urban land management. Population is often projected as a bulk national number without details about spatial distribution. We use Landsat and population data in a methodology to project and map U.S. urbanization for …

  • Impact of urbanization on US surface climate

Open Access•Lahouari Bounoua, Ping Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2015

We combine Landsat and MODIS data in a land model to assess the impact of urbanization on US surface climate. For cities built within forests, daytime urban land surface temperature (LST) is much higher than that of vegetated lands. For example, in Washington DC and Atlanta, daytime mean temperature differences between impervious and vegetated lands reach 3.3 and 2.0 °C, respectively. Conversely, for cities built within arid lands, such as Phoeni…

  • Linking Climate to Incidence of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (L. major) in Pre-Saharan North Africa

Open Access•Lahouari Bounoua, Kholoud Kahime et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

Shifts in surface climate may have changed the dynamic of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) in the pre-Saharan zones of North Africa. Caused by Leishmania major, this form multiplies in the body of rodents serving as reservoirs of the disease. The parasite is then transmitted to human hosts by the bite of a Phlebotomine sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae) that was previously fed by biting an infected reservoir. We examine the seasonal and intera…
