  • The Leiden-Turin Excavations at Saqqara

    Open Access•Lara Weiss, Christian Greco•ARTICLE•Heritage•2022

This article highlights the history of almost 50 years of Leiden archaeological work at Saqqara, in the cemetery south of the Unas causeway, and places the recent findings of the current Leiden-Turin Expedition within a broader historical context, both ancient and modern. The relationship between the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden and Egypt started almost 200 years ago, with the acquisition of the first objects. The arrival of a collection of important…

  • Religion in the making

Open Access•Janico Albrecht, Christopher Degelmann et al.•ARTICLE•Religion•2018•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 59

  • The Consumption of Religion in Roman Karanis

    Open Access•Lara Weiss•ARTICLE•Religion in the Roman Empire•2015

This article takes a critical look at methodological questions when using artefacts of material culture in the history of religions: how were figurines typified in old excavations and how do we today decide between categorisation of objects as toys or religious objects? Drawing on artefacts excavated at Karanis in the 1930s and also including ethnographic evidence, the paper seeks to overcome the old dichotomy by taking into account the option of…

  • Personal Religious Practice

    Open Access•Lara Weiss•ARTICLE•The Journal of Egyptian Archaeology•2009

The household assemblage at Deir el-Medina reflects the abandonment process of the village rather than the areas of household activity. The analysis of immobile features is therefore more reliable as a source of information than the study of artefacts. An important immovable feature of the houses at Deir el-Medina is the platform (the so-called lits clos). It is shown that these platforms served as house altars. The custom of building house altar…
