  • The Political Economy of Tax Reform in Venezuela

    Diego Abente•ARTICLE•Comparative Politics•1990•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 4

In the last decade the Latin American political science literature has focused increasingly on the analysis of public policy. To date, however, this literature has failed to provide satisfactory answers to some fundamental theoretical questions concerning the importance of variations in regimes or government for understanding public policy formation. First, how important is regime type in understanding policy formation processes? And second, how …

  • The Liberal Republic and the Failure of Democracy

    Open Access•Diego Abente•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•1989•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 6

Although the study of the liberal republic (1870-1936) could shed considerable light on the overall pattern of political development, this period has remained one of the most under-studied and undervalued of the already under-researched history of Paraguay. In an attempt to fill that lacuna—albeit partially—this article reexamines the available data, discusses new evidence, and reinterprets the period with different theoretical categories. In thi…

  • The War of the Triple Alliance

    Open Access•Diego Abente•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•1987

The Paraguayan War, or War of the Triple Alliance, fought by Paraguay against Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay (1864–1870), remains unique in the Latin American context in several respects. Dire in its duration and human toll, the war's underlying conflict was not directly related to specific boundary disagreements. Unlike other Latin American conflicts, the War of the Triple Alliance has stirred a passionate controversy involving heavy ideological…

  • Venezuelan Democracy Revisited

    Open Access•Diego Abente•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•1987

The books under review here explore two major themes. The first is the question of the nature, potential, and limits of the Venezuelan democracy. A second locus of attention is the actual functioning of the Venezuelan system, from both historical and more contemporary perspectives. My discussion will consider the ways in which the works at hand examine these broad questions
