Japan at the Forefront of the Economics of Aging? A Bibliometric Analysis
Building a New Economy
Hampered digitalization
This article examines how business, labor, and the state have adapted to digitalization, highlighting the critical role of national institutions in shaping how societies experience this global shift. By drawing on Régulation Theory and considering the case of Japan, this article analyzes the interplay between competition, wage-labor relations, and the state. The paper argues that Japan’s response to digitalization has reinforced neoliberal restru…
Care-led innovation
As life expectancy increases, older adults have a higher probability of experiencing various forms of physical frailty and social vulnerability, challenging their autonomy and independent living. In this context, new technologies specifically designed to meet their needs are developed and marketed. While their positive contributions are acknowledged, actors in the field and the scientific literature alike have identified significant limitations. …
Social’ robot and social relations in care settings
Socially assistive robots in eldercare settings, i.e. ‘social’ robots, are currently being promoted and studied, particularly in Japan. Among these studies, clinical evaluation of their effectiveness in experimental research predominates, while studies that critically and analytically describe relations between actors in long-term care settings where robots are present are growing but still scarce. In this paper, we argue that understanding how o…

Why do Redistributive Policies Differ across Countries? Analyzing the Multiple Dimensions of Preferences for Redistribution
Why are some countries characterized by more income redistribution than others? Based mainly on Trans‐Atlantic comparisons, the literature has referred to dissimilarities in preferences for redistribution. In this article, we extend this literature by focusing on multiple dimensions of redistributive preferences and adding Japan to the comparison. More precisely, using data for France, the US, and Japan from ISSP 2009, we apply cross‐sectional re…

Abenomics
Abenomics initially generated high expectations but it has more recently come to be seen as yet another failed economic experiment. In addition, discussion of Abenomics often verges on caricature. It is thus crucial to provide a critical and balanced evaluation. We argue that, over the past five years, the proactive policies pursued under Abenomics played a decisive role in reversing one cause of the Japanese slowdown – inconsistent economic poli…

Des relations entre institutions et performances économiques
Les recherches qui identifient les réformes institutionnelles souhaitables du point de vue de l’efficacité économique placent le débat à un niveau différent de celui sur lequel se jouent les mutations concrètes des systèmes capitalistes. » (B. Amable & S. Palombarini, 2005) « The core argument is that labour market institutions, and especially capital-labour relations, play a determining role in shaping modes of development. (...) If for example,…
Bringing Asia into the comparative capitalism perspective
While Western industrialized societies have almost gained a canonical status within political economy approaches (Blyth, 2003), Asian economies and their internal diversities have received less attention. This special issue of Socio-Economic Review1 aims to integrate Asia into the comparative capitalism approach in a more differentiated way, and hereby hopes to substantiate it. Asian countries are becoming the leading economies worldwide and conf…

The Diversity of Capitalism and Heterogeneity of Firms—A Case Study of Japan during the Lost Decade
The evolution of the productivity dispersion of firms
Introduction
Why some firms persistently out-perform others
Although heterogeneity in the performance of firms is a well-established stylized fact, we still lack full understanding of its origins and the reasons why it persists. Instead of assuming that performance differences are exogenous, this article focuses on two endogenous strategies—innovation and global engagement—and interprets them as two ways to accumulate knowledge and improve firms’ capabilities. We are particularly interested in analyzing i…

Wage and Productivity Differentials in Japan - The Role of Labor Market Mechanisms
Wage and Productivity Differentials in Japan
This paper aims at explaining two stylized facts of the Lost Decade in Japan: rising wage inequalities and increasing firm‐level productivity differentials. We build a model where firms can choose between efficiency wages with endogenous effort and competitive wages, and show that it can replicate those facts. Using Japanese microeconomic data, we find support for the existence of efficiency wages in one group of firms and competitive wages in th…
Quiet Politics and Business Power
