  • An emerging diplomatic system for the EU? Frameworks and Issues

Posterior…

  • EU-oriented bilateralism: Evaluating the role of member state embassies in the European Union

Jozef Bátora, Brian Hocking•ARTICLE•Cambridge Review of International…•2009•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 16

The European Union (EU) constitutes an evolving diplomatic milieu characterized by high levels of interconnectedness among the politico-administrative apparatuses of member states. The article assesses whether the continued presence of member state bilateral embassies in the EU is residual and largely emptied of function, or whether they are adapting their role to new requirements in the EU policy environment. An analytical framework is developed…

  • The Diplomacy of Proximity and Specialness: Enhancing Canada's Representation in the United States

Brian Hocking, Donna Lee•ARTICLE•The Hague Journal of Diplomacy•2006

Diplomatic representation, both as a concept and in terms of its structures and processes, does not receive the attention that it deserves. This is surprising given that it forms a central concern for both analysts and practitioners of diplomacy, with the latter confronting multiple challenges in adapting modes of representation to changes in their international and domestic political environments. One facet of this can be identified in responses…

  • Privatizing Diplomacy

    Open Access•Brian Hocking•ARTICLE•International Studies Perspectives•2004•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 3

Editor's Note: Globalization, deregulation, and marketization are restructuring the relationship between public and private actors in the twenty‐first century. It appears to many observers as if governments are giving up their traditional prerogatives and delegating to the private sector functions that are central to the state. These include critical areas of state control including diplomacy and security affairs. This ISP Policy Forum explores t…

  • Government–Business Strategies in EU–US Economic Relations: The Lessons of the Foreign Sales Corporations Issue

Open Access•Brian Hocking, Steven Mcguire•ARTICLE•JCMS Journal of Common Market…•2002•Citada por: 8

The increasingly complex character of the US–EU economic relationship is well understood. Within this relationship, trade politics is an important setting for the interaction of firms, states and civil society. Focusing on a highly significant transatlantic trade dispute relating to a US tax policy (called foreign sales corporations), the article explores the business–government interactions generated. We conclude that such cases illustrate how t…

  • Catalytic Diplomacy: Beyond ‘Newness’ and ‘Decline’

    Brian Hocking•CHAPTER•Innovation in Diplomatic Practice•1999

This chapter is concerned with two long-standing themes in debates about diplomacy: 'newness' and 'decline'. It rests on the belief that these debates have generated a largely sterile discussion rooted in two competing perspectives on international relations: state-centric and world society views. Understanding the importance of diplomacy, however, requires that it be extracted from this longstanding dialogue of the deaf and that the role of dipl…

  • The End(s) of Diplomacy

    Open Access•Brian Hocking•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•1998•Citada por: 2

Diplomacy is no stranger to contentious debate. That it is in decline -- whether as an institution of the international system or in terms of the profession to which that institution has given birth -- is a well rehearsed proposition. But your readers might be forgiven for succumbing to some confusion having read the two articles in the last issue (autumn 1997) under the banner 'The end of diplomacy?' For, in different ways, the contributions fro…

  • The woods and the trees: Catalytic diplomacy and Canada's trials as a 'forestry superpower

    Brian Hocking•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•1996•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 10

The environmental agenda provides ample evidence of the growing complexity characterising much of contemporary policy‐making. But an understanding of the role of diplomacy within the policy processes has been constrained by assumptions rooted in debates about the nature of international relations and the appropriate focus for its analysis, leading to the usually unproductive debates about the ‘decline’ of diplomacy. What is needed is a re‐examina…

    Brian Hocking•CHAPTER•Localizing Foreign Policy•1993

A leading article in a 1983 issue of the Wall Street Journal headed ‘George v.
