  • Relation between serum uric acid and blood pressure in adolescents

    Open Access•Harris S Goldstein, Paul Manowitz•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1993

In adults, serum uric acid is positively associated with blood pressure levels. It is also a predictor of the development of hypertension in normotensive adults. The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of serum uric acid to systolic and diastolic blood pressure in adolescents. The data, from Cycle III of the National Health Examination Survey, consisted of a national probability sample of 6768 youths, 12-17 years old, in the United …

  • Suppressor Effects in the Relations of Psychological Variables to Resting Blood Pressure

    Open Access•Harris S Goldstein, Robert Edelberg et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

The role of suppressor effects in obscuring the relation of psychological variables and blood pressure was studied. Forty-five nonmedicated patients in a family practice rated themselves relative to their peers on a series of characteristics. Two of these, trapped and lonely, exhibited marked suppressor effects in their relationship with each other and resting blood pressure. Self-ratings of lonely exhibited a moderately strong positive associati…

  • Relationship of resting blood pressure and heart rate to experienced anger and expressed anger

Harris S Goldstein, Robert Edelberg et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1988

Forty-five nonmedicated subjects rated on analog scales the anger they experienced at home and at work (Experienced Anger). They also rated the extent to which others were aware of their anger (Expressed Anger) and the extent to which anger had been expressed in their families or origin (Family Expressed Anger). They were then physiologically monitored during a 2-min relaxation period that followed habituation to the laboratory setting. For the g…

  • Conduct Problems, Parental Supervision, and Cognitive Development of 12- to 17-Year-Olds

    Open Access•Harris S Goldstein•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1986

Data from the Cycle III Health Examination Survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics provided the opportunity to examine the effect of conduct problems on cognitive development in a representative sample of the Nation's 12- to 17-yr.-olds. Conduct problems (school discipline, police contact, and arrest) and degree of parental supervision were the two factors in the analysis of covariance design with Intellectual Index (WISC Vo…

  • Fathers' Absence and Cognitive Development of Children over a 3- to 5-Year Period

    Open Access•Harris S Goldstein•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1983

A national probability sample of 1774 children examined at 6 to 11 and re-examined at 12 to 17 years of age provided an opportunity to examine in a longitudinal perspective the effect of the fathers' absence on cognitive development. There were no significant differences in fathers' presence or absence in the outcome measures—WISC Vocabulary and Block Design and WRAT Reading and Arithmetic—for either the white or black children. Black children as…

  • Fathers' Absence and Cognitive Development of 12- to 17-Year-Olds

    Open Access•Harris S Goldstein•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1982

A national probability sample of 12- to 17-yr.-old children provided an opportunity to examine the effect of the fathers' absence on cognitive development while controlling for the major confounding factors of parental education and income. Significant differences in the outcomes measures—WISC Vocabulary and Block Design and WRAT Reading and Arithmetic—of the two groups were almost entirely due to the control variables and not the fathers' absenc…

  • Age Standardisation and Seasonal Effects in Mental Testing

Open Access•H Goldstein, Harris S Goldstein et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1974•Citada por: 1

S ummary . It is pointed out that there are two distinct types of age standardisations for tests of school attainment. One is concerned with allowing for differences in age between children tested at the same time, and the other is concerned with allowing for average changes in test scores with time of year. Standardisation procedures do not normally take account of this distinction. It is also shown that there is no increase in attainment scores…

  • Leary's Interpersonal Diagnosis in Mothers of Severely Disturbed Children Attending a Therapeutic Nursery

    Dorothy Gartner, Harris S Goldstein•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1973

The Interpersonal Diagnosis was administered to 19 mothers of children with serious emotional disturbances of early childhood. These mothers perceived themselves, their spouses, and parents as exploitive, autocratic, and aggressive. They had also been found to be chronically depressed. The children may have experienced severe affectional deprivation during the early phases of development due to their mothers' incapacitating and isolating depressi…

  • Some Characteristics of Mothers of Severely Disturbed Children in a Therapeutic Nursery

    Open Access•Dorothy Gartner, Harris S Goldstein•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1972

19 mothers of children with serious emotional disturbances of early childhood were interviewed and administered the MMPI and Picture Frustration Test. Interview data showed that a high percentage of mothers experienced perinatal depression (66%) and marital discord (78%). MMPI profiles indicated a high degree of psychopathology. The P-F test characterized these mothers as intropunitive. Maternal depression during an infant's first year of life ma…

  • Cognitive Functions in Negro and White Children in a Child Guidance Clinic

    Open Access•Harris S Goldstein, Rosalind Peck•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1971

The IQs of Negro and white children attending an inner-city child guidance clinic were examined. The tests employed were the WISC and the Harris modification of the Goodenough Draw-A-Man test. The white males ( N = 22) scored significantly higher ( p < .001) than the Negro males ( N = 34) only on the Verbal part of the WISC. The Similarities score of Negro males with low Vocabulary scores was significantly higher ( p < .001) than their Vocabulary…
