  • Can severity of a humanitarian crisis be quantified? Assessment of the Inform severity index

Open Access•Velma K Lopez, Angeliki Nika et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2023

BACKGROUND: Those responding to humanitarian crises have an ethical imperative to respond most where the need is greatest. Metrics are used to estimate the severity of a given crisis. The INFORM Severity Index, one such metric, has become widely used to guide policy makers in humanitarian response decision making. The index, however, has not undergone critical statistical review. If imprecise or incorrect, the quality of decision making for human…

Open Access•Mary Jean Brown, Purvi Patel et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Childhood lead exposure remains a key health concern for officials worldwide, contributing some 600,000 new cases of intellectually disabled children annually. Most children affected by high exposure to lead live in low- and middle-income countries. The leaded gasoline phase out in India was completed in 2000. Yet, in 2020, an estimated 275 million children aged 0 to 9 years had blood lead levels (BLLs) ≥ 5 μg/dL known to adversely affect intelli…

  • Using Small Area Prevalence Survey Methods to Conduct Blood Lead Assessments among Children

Open Access•Kathryn B Egan, Timothy Dignam et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Public health officials who wish to assess child and household-level blood lead data can quickly apply the data collection methodologies using this standardized protocol here to target resources and obtain assistance with these complex procedures. The standardized methods allow for comparisons across geographic areas and over time

INTRODUCTION: As of 26 March 2021, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention had reported 4 159 055 cases of COVID-19 and 111 357 deaths among the 55 African Union member states; however, no country has published a nationally representative serosurvey as of October 2021. Such data are vital for understanding the pandemic's progression on the continent, evaluating containment measures, and policy planning. METHODS: We conducted a cross…

  • Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms in Households With Children, Puerto Rico, 2010

Open Access•Jessica Chen, Timothy Dignam et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Primary Prevention•2020

  • The burden of non-communicable diseases and their related risk factors in the country of Georgia, 2015

Open Access•Steven Russell, Lela Sturua et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Georgia has a high NCD burden, and results from the survey showed an increase in obesity and elevated blood pressure since 2010. The prevalence of other major NCDs have remained near levels reported in the 2010 STEPs survey. Comprehensive public health interventions are needed to control the heath security threats of major NCDs and their risk factors in the future

  • Hepatitis C prevalence and risk factors in Georgia, 2015

Open Access•Liesl M Hagan, Ana Kasradze et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Georgia has a high HCV burden, and a majority of infected persons are unaware of their status. Ensuring a safe blood supply, implementing innovative screening strategies beyond a risk-based approach, and intensifying prevention efforts among persons who inject drugs are necessary steps to reach Georgia's HCV elimination goal

  • Risk factors for unsafe behaviors toward grenades among rural populations affected by explosive devices in Colombia

Open Access•Andrew T Boyd, Kristin Becknell et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2018

Participants reported frequent ED exposure but low receipt of MRE. Our findings should guide MRE improvement in ED-affected areas by strengthening the connection between ED knowledge and avoiding unsafe behavior, with a particular focus on people working outdoors. MRE should promote knowledge of ED risks but should also recognize socioeconomic factors that lead to engaging in unsafe behaviors

  • Retrospective analysis of reproductive health indicators in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees post-emergency camps 2007–2013

Open Access•Jennifer Whitmill, Curtis Blanton et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2016

Comprehensive, consistent and comparable statistics on reproductive health provides an opportunity to assess progress towards indicator standards. Despite some improvements over time, this analysis confirms that most countries did not meet standards and that there were differences in reproductive health indicators between countries and across years. Consequently, the HIS periodic monitoring of key reproductive health indicators at the camp level …

  • An Investigation into Suicides Among Bhutanese Refugees Resettled in the United States Between 2008 and 2011

Open Access•Farah Husain, Colleen Hardy et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2015

The HWB performed well during the early phases of the emergency, however longer term results in this setting are unclear. The low levels of reported use measured by proxy indicators at six months indicated decreasing acceptability over time or a reflection of potential differences between the two sites. It is also unknown whether the HWB influenced hand washing behavior. Study findings were shared with the manufacturer in an effort to improve the…

  • Soap is not enough

Open Access•Raina M Phillips, Jelena Vujcic et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2015

Despite intensive messaging regarding handwashing with soap and access to soap and water, rinsing hands with water alone rather than washing hands with soap remains more common among the refugees in Maban County. This practice puts them at continued risk for communicable disease transmission. Qualitative research into local beliefs and more effective messaging may help future programs tailor handwashing interventions
