Deaths by suicide in Bangladesh have an atypical sex ratio, with higher rates in females than in males—a characteristic shared with several countries in Southern Asia. Reasons for this are explored in this paper. A Canadian study of ex-prostitutes in Alberta indicated that many had been sexually abused within their families. A comparison with sexually abused controls who did not enter the sex trade indicated less severe sexual abuse and less association with other forms of family violence and abuse. Validating an American Scale in Hong Kong
The construct validity of a Chinese-language version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D; Radloff, 1977) was tested on a sample of 138 Hong Kong Chinese married couples. Confirmatory factor analysis identified 2 factors: (a) depressive symptom factors and (b) interpersonal problem factors. The Billion Dollar Costs of Troubled Youth
A follow-up study of 227 youth (to mean age 19.5) excluded from school and transferred into special behavioural units found that 63% had criminal convictions after leaving formal schooling, at age 16. Thirty percent had been convicted of “violence against the person”, and 31% had served or were serving prison terms. Twenty six percent had been convicted of 10 or more crimes. Towards Achievement of Reading Skill Potential Through Peer Tutoring in Mainstreamed 13-year-olds
A long-term study of potentially disabled children identified at birth, yielded 27 disabled children who had not achieved the reading ages predicted by their verbal IQ scores. Peer-tutoring outside of the classroom resulted in significant increases in reading age, self-esteem and academic self-confidence, in comparison with non-disabled control children. The psychosocial adjustment of three groups of 'young elderly' Cantonese-speaking Chinese is compared with the adjustment of European-Canadians. Suicidal ideas and behavior in contrasted generations
A comparison was made of young (aged 18–24) and old (60 plus) respondents in a community mental health survey of 679 adults in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Young people had significantly poorer mental health than did the elderly respondents and also reported more suicidal ideas and behavior in their lifetime.
