HE REPUBLICAN REVOLUTION of November 15, 1889, is without doubt the most perplexing political event in the history of Brazil. The sudden toppling of a popular and revered monarch and the establishment of a governmental system hitherto little supported caught both Brazilians and foreign observers by surprise. IN OCTOBER 1822, seven Brazilian deputies to the Cortes Gerais Extraordinarias e Constituintes of Lisbon stealthily' left the capital for Brazil by way of England. The leaders of the independence movements in the several Ibero-American areas frequently turned their attention to the problems of the aborigine.
