Changes in the Southern Urals environment
Palaeoenvironmental studies of the Southern Ural provide a link between the Holocene records of Europe and Asia, and the steppe and forest zones of the continent. Owing to a lack of well-dated Holocene sequences and the strong influence of local factors, the overall pattern of Holocene environmental changes in the Southern Ural forest zone is still a matter of debate. To solve this problem, Lake Turgoyak, which is influenced to a minimum extent b…

The results of spectral, mass spectrometric and energy-dispersive scanning electron microscopy analyzes of non-ferrous metal from the Petrovka culture of the XIX–XVIII centuries BC in Northern Kazakhstan are presented. The metal was mainly analyzed by spectral analysis in the 70s–80s of the XX century in the Laboratory of natural science methods of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since the collection is in the fun…
Slag Inclusions in Iron Artifacts from Cemeteries at Kichigino I and Krasnaya Gorka, and the Metallurgy of the Early Iron Age Itkul Culture
Silicate slag inclusions in iron artifacts from the Trans-Urals and in iron slags from sites of the Itkul culture were analyzed to assess the geochemical characteristics of iron ore sources exploited during the Early Iron Age. Slag inclusions were found in 19 out of 25 samples from Kichigino I and Krasnaya Gorka. For comparison, we used 12 iron slag samples from Early Iron Age and medieval sites near Lake Irtysh and from Zotino mine. Via statisti…
The Geochemistry of Unalloyed Copper Metallurgical Group Indicates Copper Ore Sources in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of the Urals
Trace elements in copper artifacts from Late Bronze and Early Iron Age sites in the Urals, formerly attributed to the metallurgical group of “chemically pure” copper, were analyzed using the method of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The metal of which artifacts included in this group are made reveals geochemical markers suggesting that “pure” copper actually falls into several subgroups. The PCA analysis of the result…
Were metalworkers itinerant? Interdisciplinary analysis of a metalworker's burial at the Krivoe Ozero late Bronze Age cemetery (southern Trans-Urals, Russia)
Chemistry of tin bronzes and possible sources of tin in the Urals and Kazakhstan in the Late Bronze Age
The article discusses geochemical groups identified according to the results of the LA-ISP-MS analysis of tin bronzes of the Ural-Kazakhstan region of the Late Bronze Age. Based on the statistical analysis of 13 impurity ele-ments of 74 bronze and tin-containing copper products from the sites of the 2nd - early 1st mil BC in the Southern Trans-Urals and Northern Kazakhstan, seven chemically contrasting groups have been identified, which mark vari…
