  • In Defence of a Political Economy of the Media

    Eileen R Meehan, Janet Wasko•ARTICLE•Javnost - The Public•2013

This essay addresses recent misrepresentations of the study of political economy of the media. The discussion is grounded in some historical background, including a brief sketch of some of the history of critical communications research in the US, which flourished within the global profusion of critical research in the 1960s and 1970s. Part of this history is the emergence of organisational support for critical scholarship as well as the long-ter…

Critical Crossroads or Parallel Routes?Political Economy and New Approaches to Studying Media Industries and Cultural Products Janet Wasko (bio) and Eileen R. Meehan (bio) The study of media industries may be relatively new to the Society for Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS), but focus on this area has a long history and, in the United States, has included research on the interconnected industries of telephony, radio, film, journalism, and televis…

In the United States, neo-conservatives began legalizing transindustrial media conglomerates under the Reagan Administration in the 1980s. Subsequent Administrations have ‘stayed the course’ by further deregulating broadcasting/cable services, retreating from any enforcement of anti-trust law, and defunding governmental services (Streeter 1996; Tillinghast 2000). By withdrawing governmental entities from the oligopolized markets for network telev…

This article reflects on problems in defining and operationalizing the term culture. Most media scholars interested in cultural studies and most cultural studies scholars define culture as a whole way of life and then operationalize the study of culture as the analysis of texts. This reduction of a whole way of living, being, and doing in the world to reading texts has methodological benefits, but it obscures experiential differences that mark th…

  • Conceptualizing culture as commodity

    Eileen R Meehan•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Mass…•1986•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 10

Critical inquiries into television generally focus either on the industrial organization of television or the symbolic world of television. In this way, scholars have addressed television partially, leaving unexplored the connections between the symbolic and the economic which together constitute television as a contradictory institution. By integrating these two approaches, however, scholars can theorize television as simultaneously a commodity …

  • Critical theorizing on broadcast history

    Eileen R Meehan•ARTICLE•Journal of Broadcasting &…•1986•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 5

This article focused on the problem of causal explanations embedded in historical accounts. Using three major theoretical positions — instrumentalism, institutionalism, and structuralism — the analysis produced three different accounts of the same event, CBS's 1970 change in programming policy. Because each position took a different level of analysis with a different degree of abstraction, each historical account implies different root causes for…
