  • Date, Authorship, and Literary Structure of the Great Peace Scripture Digest

    Grégoire Espesset•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2021•Referencias: 2

The text opening the "Great Peace Part" ("Taiping bu" 太平部) in the Ming Taoist Canon, the Great Peace Scripture Digest (Taiping jing chao 太平經鈔), is widely confused with the famous Great Peace Scripture (Taiping jing 太平經), which follows it in the Canon. The first full analysis and reassessment of the Great Peace Scripture Digest, this paper reviews the textual morphology of its ancient and modern editions, discusses current hypotheses concerning it…

  • Portents in Early Imperial China

    Grégoire Espesset•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Still neglected by modern research, the “Weft” (or “Apocrypha”) contain a wealth of unexploited data relevant to Chinese history in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. Sometimes ascribed to Confucius, these texts, whose Chinese name ( wei 緯) denotes the crosswise threads of woven fabric, have long been perceived as arcane supplements to the “Classics,” called jing 經, the lengthwise threads. Repeatedly prohibited and destroyed, they survive …

  • The Invention of Buddho-Taoism

    Grégoire Espesset•ARTICLE•Asiatische Studien – Études…•2017

“Buddho-Taoism” is a neologism that appeared in Western academic writings during the late nineteen-forties, was put to various uses without ever being consensually defined, enjoyed a brief vogue around the turn of the twenty-first century, and began to fall from grace in recent years. Not only did this neologism implicitly create new epistemic repertoires derived from the names of two presumably known religions. Increasingly loaded with a heterog…

  • A case study on the evolution of Chinese religious symbols from talismanic paraphernalia to Taoist liturgy

    Open Access•Grégoire Espesset•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2015•Referencias: 14

The mid-fifteenth-century Taoist Canon (Zhengtong daozang正統道藏) contains five specimens of a religious artefact called "Great Peace Symbol" ("Taiping fu" 太平符), dispersed between five texts spanning about a millennium. The introduction to this paper discusses the meaning of the Chinese wordfu符 and its most widely used English rendition, "talisman". The article briefly presents the source of each specimen, attempts a deconstruction of its morphology…

  • Epiphanies of Sovereignty and the Rite of Jade Disc Immersion in Weft Narratives

    Open Access•Grégoire Espesset•ARTICLE•Early China•2014

This article deals with facets of the political ideology of late pre-imperial and early imperial China as documented by remnants of a dozen texts belonging to an under-explored genre known in English as weft ( wei 緯) writings or the “Confucian Apocrypha.” Its focus is on the transcendence of hierarchy and sovereignty, the transfer of dynastic legitimacy, and the pragmatic vehicle of “tangible” revelation. After a terminological introduction, the …

  • Local Resistance in Early Medieval Chinese Historiography and the Problem of Religious Overinterpretation

    Open Access•Grégoire Espesset•ARTICLE•The Medieval History Journal•2014•Referencias: 7

The official corpus of Chinese historiography contains a wealth of valuable information on what may be termed local resistance to the centralised empire in early medieval China (third to sixth century). Sinologists specialised in the study of Chinese religions commonly reconstruct the religious history of the era by interpreting some of these data. In the process, however, methodological mistakes often occur, such as disregard for the primary pur…

The affection of the Chinese for numerical categories has now become a cliché but the study of Chinese thought has mostly focused on binary (the Yin and Yang) and quinary (the Five agents) systems, while the notion of Trinity is generally considered to characterize the Western world. By way of contrast, the content of the Taiping jing, a source which reflects ideas deeply rooted in the worldview of Han times despite its problematic textual histor…
