  • Psychological Precursors of Disorders

Open Access•Caroline Bedell Thomas, Thomas R Schori et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1997

While still in medical school at The Johns Hopkins University, participants in the Precursors Study, a longitudinal study of the precursors of coronary artery disease and other disorders, were given the Rorschach test along with other psychological and physical tests. In the present study, we looked at a cohort of 41 participants who, 8 to 24 years after having finished medical school, could be classified into five disorder groups: coronary, hype…

  • Development of Alternate Methods for Scoring the Rorschach Interaction Scale

    Open Access•John W Shaffer, Pirkko L Graves et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1986

The Rorschach Interaction Scale (RIS) was recently developed to permit scoring the content of certain Rorschach responses in terms of the emotional tone (both positive and negative) associated with responses involving the interaction between two or more human, human-like, or animal figures. Scores on the original scale have been found to be related to later health or disease in a long-range, prospective investigation of medical students. In an ef…

  • Are Words of the Rorschach Predictors of Disease and Death? The Case of “Whirling”

Caroline Bedell Thomas, Karen Rose Duszynski•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1985

The frequency with which the word whirling and similar words (whirlall words) were used in Rorschach tests administered to 1154 medical students 20 to 35 years ago has been counted by computer. Subjects (now for the most part physicians in midlife) were assigned to different groups according to their health status as of December 1982. When the proportion of subjects using whirlall words was compared across health groupings, those in the suicide a…

  • Dimensions of Family Attitudes among Female Medical Students

Open Access•Karen Rose Duszynski, John Whitcomb Shaffer et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1983

Factor analyses of a 65-item Family Attitudes Questionnaire were performed using data from 77 female medical students, and the results compared with those derived from parallel analyses previously carried out on 913 males. The first unrotated principal component appeared to be highly similar in both male and female groups, in that family closeness is the construct apparently measured. Further analyses, however, revealed the first principal compon…

  • Themes of Interaction in Medical Studentsʼ Rorschach Responses as Predictors of Midlife Health or Disease

Pirkko Lauslahti Graves, Caroline Bedell Thomas•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1981

The purpose of this study was to examine variations in individual approaches to human relationships among members of a cohort of healthy medical students as revealed by their Rorschach Tests, and to explore the association between the assessed youthful relationship potential and midlife health or illness. In particular, the relationship potential among future cancer victims was found to differ significantly form that of their fellow students who …

  • Family Attitudes Reported in Youth as Potential Predictors of Cancer

Caroline Bedell Thomas, Karen Rose Duszynski et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1979

In long-term prospective study of a cohort of former medical students, men who later developed cancer reported different family attitudes in youth from those of their healthy classmates. The items checked on a Family Attitude Questionnaire by the future cancer group indicated a lack of closeness to parents compared with the items checked by the healthy group. Family attitudes of the future mental illness/suicide group resembled those of the cance…

  • Precursors of Premature Disease and Death

    Open Access•Thomas R Schori, Caroline Bedell Thomas•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

Participants in the Precursors Study affected with any of six disorders were compared with their matched, but healthy, control counterparts on 4 Rorschach and 10 Figure-drawing factors. Similar comparisons were made for the psychological (suicide, mental illness, and emotional disturbance) and somatic (essential hypertension, coronary occlusion, and malignant tumor) subsets of the affected participants and for those affected by each of the six in…
