  • Hayek, Equilibrium, and The Role of Institutions in Economic Order

    Karen I Vaughn•ARTICLE•Critical Review•2013•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 18

In the 1930s, socialist economists used the assumptions of equilibrium theory to argue that a central planner could coordinate supply and demand from above. This argument led Hayek, over the years, to try to explain the limitations of equilibrium theory and, conversely, to explain how capitalism functioned without the assumptions of equilibrium being met. In a changing world of agents who are ignorant of the future, how is a functioning market “o…

  • The problem of order in Austrian economics

    Karen I Vaughn•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•1992•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 7

The current controversy among Austrian economists concerns the precise way in which time and ignorance is to be incorporated into market analysis. While both sides think the market process is fundamentally orderly and coherent, they disagree about how to conceptualize that order. One side, associated mostly with Israel Kirzner, conceives of economic order in the conventional sense of a system converging towards a neoclassical notion of equilibriu…

    Open Access•Karen I Vaughn•ARTICLE•Analyse & Kritik•1988

This paper argues that there are areas of political behavior for which the usual assumption of wealth maximizing homo economicus is to narrow to generate convincing explanation of behavior. In particular, it is argued that for many political decisions, people choose according to some set of moral preconceptions while for others, people have insufficient information to make economic choices even if they were inclined to do so. This implies that no…
