  • Socio-ecological determinants of multiple anthropometric failures among under-five children

Open Access•Biniyam Sahiledengle, Paul Russell Ward et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

The composite index of anthropometric failure (CIAF) offers a comprehensive measure of the overall burden of undernutrition in children, extending beyond the traditional anthropometric indices to better capture the co-occurrence of multiple anthropometric deficits. Despite its growing use, evidence on the determinants of CIAF remains fragmented and inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify and synthesize the determi…

  • Perceived stigma and the role of BMI on perceived HIV-related stigma among people living with HIV/Aids in Southeast Ethiopia

Open Access•Fikreab Desta, Demisu Zenbaba et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

The prevalence of perceived HIV-related stigma was found high. Patients with poor social support and non-adherent to HAART were more likely to suffer from HIV-related perceived stigma. Our findings suggest that there is a relationship between body mass index and perceived HIV-related stigma, while depression can indirectly predict perceived HIV-related stigma

However, there is a limited understanding of the mental health issues faced by ALHIV in Indonesia and the various contributing factors globally. This study aimed to explore the mental health challenge…

  • Determinants of aggregate anthropometric failure among children under-five years in Ethiopia

Open Access•Biniyam Sahiledengle, Lillian Mwanri et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Undernutrition significantly contributes to failure to thrive in children under five, with those experiencing multiple forms of malnutrition facing the highest risks of morbidity and mortality. Conventional markers such as stunting, wasting, and underweight have received much attention but are insufficient to identify multiple types of malnutrition, prompting the development of the Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure (CIAF) and the Composit…

  • Co-existence of maternal overweight/obesity, child undernutrition, and anaemia among mother-child pairs in Ethiopia

Open Access•Biniyam Sahiledengle, Lillian Mwanri et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Ethiopia is currently known to be the most food-insecure country in sub-Saharan Africa, where childhood undernutrition remains endemic. While attention is increasingly being paid to childhood undernutrition in Ethiopia, a current surge of "triple burden of malnutrition" (TBM) has received less attention. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of TBM and identify the associated factors in Ethiopia. Data were from the Ethiopian D…

Open Access•Kingsley E Agho, Stanley Chitekwe et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Micronutrient deficiencies remain a public health burden among non-pregnant women in developing countries, including Nepal. Hence, this study examined micronutrient deficiencies among non-pregnant Nepalese women aged 15-49 using the 2016 Nepal National Micronutrient Status Survey (NNMSS). Data for 2143 non-pregnant women was extracted from the 2016 NNMSS. The study analysed the levels of ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), red blood ce…

  • Childhood undernutrition mediates the relationship between open defecation with anemia among Ethiopian children

Open Access•Biniyam Sahiledengle, Pammla Petrucka et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Open defecation showed a significant direct effect on anemia. Child undernutrition remarkably mediated the relationship between OD and anemia that further magnified the effect. This finding has an important programmatic implication calling for strengthened, accelerated and large-scale implementation of strategies to end open defecation and achieve universal access to sanitation in Ethiopia

  • Household environment associated with anaemia among children aged 6–59 months in Ethiopia

Open Access•Biniyam Sahiledengle, Lillian Mwanri et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

In Ethiopia, about fifty percent of children suffer from childhood anemia, making it a serious public health issue. Open defecation is a major contributing factor to this scourge. To address this issue effectively, it is recommended to strengthen initiatives aimed at eliminating open defecation that involve various approaches, including sanitation infrastructure development, behavior change campaigns, and policy interventions. In addition, to red…

  • Concurrent wasting and stunting among under‐five children in the context of Ethiopia

Open Access•Biniyam Sahiledengle, Kingsley E Agho et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2023

Concurrent wasting and stunting (WaSt) is a condition where both wasting and stunting exist in a child at the same time. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of WaSt and to identify potential associated factors in Ethiopia. A total of 33,650 children aged between 0 and 59 months were included in the analysis from the four waves of the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey. A mixed-effects logistic regression model was used to identify the …

  • Coexistence of Anaemia and Stunting among Children Aged 6–59 Months in Ethiopia

Open Access•Biniyam Sahiledengle, Lillian Mwanri et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

One in four preschool-age children in Ethiopia had co-morbid anaemia and stunting, which is a significant public health problem. Future interventions to reduce CAS in Ethiopia should target those children perceived to be small at birth, anaemic mothers, and mothers with short stature

  • Differential Associated Factors for Inadequate Receipt of Components and Non-Use of Antenatal Care Services among Adolescent, Young, and Older Women in Nigeria

Open Access•Esther Awazzi Envuladu, Abukari I Issaka et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Nigerian women continue to die in childbirth due to inadequate health services such as antenatal care (ANC). Among other factors, the inadequate receipt or non-use of ANC appears to be associated with the age of women, remoteness, and poor households. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare the factors associated with inadequate receipt of the components and non-use of ANC among pregnant adolescents, and young and older women in Nigeria. Data…

  • Gender-specific disaggregated analysis of childhood undernutrition in Ethiopia

Open Access•Biniyam Sahiledengle, Lillian Mwanri et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our study revealed that boys were more likely to be malnourished than girls, regardless of their age category, and there were variations in the factors determining undernutrition among boys and girls. The differences in the burden of undernutrition were significant and alarming, positioning Ethiopia to be questioned whether it will meet the set Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 2 of zero hunger by 2030. These findings call for m…

  • Association between water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash) and child undernutrition in Ethiopia

Open Access•Biniyam Sahiledengle, Pammla Petrucka et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

The present study confirms that the quality of access to sanitation and housing conditions affects child linear growth indicators. Besides, household sources of drinking water did not predict the occurrence of either wasting or stunting. Further longitudinal and interventional studies are needed to determine whether individual and joint access to WASH facilities was strongly associated with child stunting and wasting
