From Roman suburbium to medieval city
This work examines the interaction between humans and animals in urban environments in north-eastern Iberia from the Roman period to the end of the Middle Ages. We present a zooarchaeological study of the faunal remains found in Sotstinent Navarro, Barcelona, an archaeological site excavated as part of a rescue project. The zooarchaeological evidence presented and analysed here provides insight into the diet and provisioning of the city over time…
Working with fowl tibiotarsals
Cranio-caudal bending and robust shafts characterize tibiotarsi of capons and egg-laying hens. • Management strategies and breed types explain size and shape variation in fowl leg bones. • Intensification of egg-production improves the keeping of sturdier fowl morphotypes. Caponization of young male birds is a practice undertaken to fatten and improve the quality of the bird’s flesh. Ethnographic work carried out in the village of Freamunde in no…
Non-funerary commensality in the Argaric Culture
Structure E50.44 in Peñalosa shows communal dining in the Argaric Culture. • Taxonomic and taphonomic analyses evidence collective consumption of multiple species. • The number of horse remains and butchery marks suggest an extraordinary event. • Structure E50.44 offers new ways to study and review Argaric fauna. Acts of commensality are well recorded throughout the Late Prehistory of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as throughout the rest of Europ…
Meat Supplies at the Ribadeo I Shipwreck (San Giacomo di Galizia galleon)
The 78 faunal remains recovered from the Ribadeo I shipwreck, identified as the San Giacomo di Galizia galleon found at the Ribadeo estuary of north-west Spain, represent a very small part of the meaty provisions that this 16th-century warship would have originally carried on board. Cattle, sheep, pig, goose and hake are the species identified in the three samples analysed. The number of cattle bulk-meat cuts from the axial skeleton and fore/hind…
Animal Consumption at Hospital de San Martín (Gran Canaria)
The Canary Islands were initially colonized around 200 CE by North African Berber populations who brought with them domestic plants and animals. These communities remained isolated until the arrival of Europeans in the Late Middle Ages which triggered the conquest of the archipelago. Its geostrategic location in the framework of Atlantic expansion facilitated the arrival of people, knowledge, goods, plants, and animals which served to shape the n…

Pathological and sub-pathological changes in European rabbit bones
To provide prevalence data for future comparative analysis of the health status of rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) accumulated in the archaeological record. Two contrasting assemblages were analysed for pathological and sub-pathological changes: 1) an assemblage of domestic modern rabbit bones; and 2) a non-anthropogenic accumulation of archaeological rabbit remains. The lesions observed macroscopically, under magnification, and radiographically …
Who let the dogs in? Lap dogs, canid sacrifices and funerary practices in the Roman cemetery of Llanos del Pretorio (Cordoba, Spain)
Archaeological and Ethnographic Insights on the Occurrence and Use of Bone Anvils in Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain)
After most researchers have agreed to interpret the bone anvils as artefacts used by blacksmiths to cut teeth on metal sickles, present lines of enquiry are focused on drawing the geographic and chronological scope of these tools. Following this path, this paper presents the results of archaeological and ethnographic surveys carried out in Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). The new data recorded not only has enabled us to document the presence a…

Vertical sheep mobility along the altitudinal gradient through stable isotope analyses in tooth molar bioapatite, meteoric water and pastures
The archaeozoological study of the domestic livestock recovered from two differ- ent stratigraphic contexts, from Structure 12 of the Cueva Pintada of Gáldar site (Gran Canaria, Spain) is presented. Both contexts are dated between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries CE. One of them is definitely previous to the conquest of the island, while the other belongs to a period in which that conquest had already taken place. Pigs, goats and sheep are t…
Beyond Adornment
The use of seashells for the decoration of pottery from the sixth millennium cal BC is well known in the western Mediterranean, with the emergence of so-called Cardial Pottery. Actually, the most discussed issue up until now has been the use of bivalves for impressed decoration. However, the experimental approach followed in the present study provides for the first time clear evidence for the utilization of a very specific group of shells as tool…
Here we present the analysis of the faunal assemblage recovered during the archaeological excavations carried out in the Biblioteca Municipal of Mértola (Alentejo, Portugal). The samples studied are dated to the Late Iron Age and the Roman Republic periods. It is outstanding the high frequency of red deer (Cervus elaphus) and the dominance of porcine remains, among which some wild boar (Sus scrofa) may be present. This trend increases towards the…

Deposits with animal bones remains buried under the floor in domestic areas, are well known ritual practices in the Peninsular Iron Age. These practices are traditionally associated either with foundation of new buildings or refurbishment, or linked to propitiation rites and fertility. Although best studied examples are in the east coast of Spain, the phenomenon is also known in other archeological interior sites. This paper presents a ritual dep…

From under the bulldozer's claws
Between 2000 and 2004, field seasons at the Lagar Velho rock-shelter (Lapedo valley, Leiria, Portugal) were dedicated to the excavation of strata preserved from the destruction that had affected the site prior to the discovery of its archaeological potential in December 1998. Those years of excavation confirmed that several archaeological contexts were spared, some with limited post-depositional disturbance and excellent preservation of the origi…

A New Statistical Tool for Comparing Animal Bone Assemblages
Killing cats in the Medieval Period. An unusual episode in the history of Cambridge, England
The partial skeletons of 79 medieval cats were recovered from a well in Cambridge, England. The animals had been killed by having their throats cut and were subsequently skinned and dismembered for consumption by the inhabitants of the town. A metrical study revealed the small stature of the cats in comparison with those from medieval Colchester and late medieval and early post-medieval Norwich, while an allometric analysis showed that the build …
