  • Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Intake, Abdominal Obesity, and Inflammation among US Adults without and with Prediabetes—An NHANES Study

    Open Access•Wei‐Ting Lin, Yu-Hsiang Kao et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Excessive sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) consumption and abdominal obesity have been independently linked to numerous disorders, including diabetes and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP). This study aimed to explore the association between SSB intake, abdominal obesity, and inflammation in normal and prediabetic adults. Sugar intake from SSBs was calculated from 24-h dietary recalls and further classified into non-, medium-, and high-intake. The …

  • The Impact of Covid-19 on Risky Behaviors and Health Changes in African-American Smokers Who Are Eligible for LDCT Screening

Open Access•Tung-Sung Tseng, Mirandy Li et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted much of day-to-day life in the US and around the world. Smokers have a higher risk of adverse outcomes due to COVID-19. This study investigated the impact of COVID-19 on risky behaviors and health changes in lower income African-American smokers eligible for Low dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening, who may be more adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 22 African-American daily smokers wh…

  • Age difference in the combined effect of soda drinks consumption and body adiposity on hyperuricaemia in US adults

    Open Access•Wei-Ting Lin, Yu-Hsiang Kao et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2021

Objective: To evaluate age-related differences in the independent/combined association of added sugar intake from soda and body adiposity with hyperuricaemia in gender-stratified US adults. Design: Consumption of added sugar from soda was calculated from 24-h dietary interviews and categorised into none, regular and excessive consumption. Hyperuricaemia was defined as serum uric acid levels >417 mmol/l in men and >357 mmol/l in women. Multiple re…

  • Effectiveness of Prevailing Flush Guidelines to Prevent Exposure to Lead in Tap Water

Open Access•Adrienne Katner, Kelsey J Pieper et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Flushing tap water is promoted as a low cost approach to reducing water lead exposures. This study evaluated lead reduction when prevailing flush guidelines (30 s−2 min) are implemented in a city compliant with lead-associated water regulations (New Orleans, LA, USA). Water samples ( n = 1497) collected from a convenience sample of 376 residential sites (2015−2017) were analyzed for lead. Samples were collected at (1) first draw ( n = 375) and af…

  • Antrodia camphorata inhibits metastasis and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition via the modulation of claudin-1 and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways in human colon cancer cells

    Open Access•You-Cheng Hseu, You‐Cheng Hseu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnopharmacology•2017

  • Who tended to continue smoking after cancer diagnosis

    Open Access•Tung-Sung Tseng, Hui‐Yi Lin et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Two-thirds of cancer survivors continued smoking after cancer diagnosis. Our study observed that the high risk group of continued smokers among cancer survivors is made up of those who are female, younger, Hispanic, with longer smoking history, underweight or with normal weight and without smoking-related cancer. These findings suggest that smoking cessation for cancer survivors should target on the high risk subgroups

  • The Therapeutic Implications of Timely Linkage and Early Retention in HIV Care

Kimberly B Ulett, James H Willig et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Patient Care and STDs•2009

Following HIV diagnosis, linkage to outpatient treatment, antiretroviral initiation, and longitudinal retention in care represent the foundation for successful treatment. While prior studies have evaluated these processes in isolation, a systematic evaluation of successive steps in the same cohort of patients has not yet been performed. To ensure optimal long-term outcomes, a better understanding of the interplay of these processes is needed. The…
