Agent-based modelling of Trypillian mega-site growth
This study shows that the characteristic ring-street layout of Trypillian mega-sites can be reproduced using simple rules for household placement, implemented as agent-based model TryHous. The model successfully generates both the overall settlement form and neighbourhood clustering, challenging the idea that such layouts required centralized planning. Simulations further demonstrate that, with realistic house-burning rates (about one generation)…
Ukrainian Archaeology Counteracts Russian Imperialism
The author argues that Soviet archaeology was primarily imperialist, though it incorporated elements of both colonial and nationalist narratives. Ukrainian Soviet archaeology, in turn, functioned as a provincial extension of this broader framework. Finally, the discussion shifts to contemporary Ukrainian archaeology, which, despite initially struggling to overcome its provincialism, now faces an existential threat from Russian aggression – a conc…
The continuity of sacred spaces in the North Pontic Steppe
This article examines a monumental structure in the North Pontic Steppe that was repurposed as a burial mound in the late fourth millennium BCE. The authors argue that this repurposing reflects a pattern of Yamna appropriation of ritual spaces, conceptualised as a ‘continuity of sacred spaces’
Modes of chipped stone tool production
The chipped stone assemblages of early farmers in the south of the Eastern Europe take several forms. 1) They can have a developed laminar component, with production wastes underrepresented, with a high percentage of retouched items (mostly blades with lateral retouch and endscrapers on blades), an exploitation of a high-quality long-distance imported raw material. These assemblages usually are numerically small. 2) Others demonstrate a “simplifi…
The chronology of the Early Trypillian expansion
A new series of 22 radiocarbon dates provides new insights on the origin and distribution of the Early Trypillian archaeological culture in modern-day Moldova and Ukraine. The paper presents data from the sites of preceding groups (5 dates), highlighting gaps in the agricultural settlement of the region, dates related to the Early Trypillia directly (14 dates) and dates from the ceramic hunter-gatherers’ sites that yielded some Early Trypillian p…
Archaeobotanical and palaeoenvironmental analyses from the easternmost Early Neolithic sites at Kamyane-Zavallia (Ukraine) and Nicolaevca V (Moldova)
Recent archaeological excavations at two Early Neolithic settlements at Kamyane-Zavallia (Ukraine) and Nicolaevca V (Moldova) have provided new plant assemblages. The sites belong to the Linearbandkeramik culture (LBK) and represent its easternmost settlements. In these regions, charred plant macro-remains are still very rarely sampled for and investigated, so these results may shed light on the plant-based economy of the first farmers of this ar…
New radiocarbon dates for the Criş site of Sacarovca I (Moldova)
Four new AMS radiocarbon dates shed new light on the chronology of one of the easternmost sites of the Criş culture. The conventional dating efforts had yielded indecisive results, while the new results correspond well to the typo-chronological position of the site (Criş IV) and the chronology of other sites with similar finds. The comparison with the nearby para-Neolithic sites demonstrated that the establishment of the para Neolithic way of lif…
Verifying the chronology of Ukrainian Neolithic
This paper addresses the earliest Neolithic phases in Ukraine: aspects relating to the chronology, methods and time of Neolithisation. In general, the earliest Neolithisation relates to the times of the Linear Pottery culture. Nevertheless, Ukraine has numerous eco-zones so the process could have been different in other zones. The authors emphasize that the key to getting closer to solving this problem is the chronology-re-dating and validation p…
Always take a look back. Ethics in post-conflict archaeology
This reaction to the Paul Newson and Ruth Young paper entitled 'Post-conflict ethics, archaeology and archaeological heritage. A call for discussion' (Archaeological dialogues, 2022) supports the call for a discussion regarding archaeological ethics in post-conflict zones. Following the agreement on the fuzzy border between the state of 'conflict' and 'post-conflict', it reflects on the continuity between these two. Furthermore, the reaction adds…
Early Metal Ages Burial Grounds Chronology and Cultural Transmission
The study of the Early Metal Age cultures of Europe has greatly improved during the last decades. New studies have been centered not only on aspects of the material culture and burial rites, but also on the chronology of the different complexes, their spread, eventually genetic evidence, and cultural transmission. Moreover, the study of the steppe zones of south-eastern Europe has improved thanks to the excavation and publication of new burial gr…
Chipped Stone Assemblage of the Layer B of the Kamyana Mohyla 1 Site (South-Eastern Ukraine) and the Issue of Kukrek in the North Meotic Steppe Region
The layer B is one of the lower layers of the long stratigraphic sequence of the Kamyana Mohyla 1 site. The layer B received eight new AMS radiocarbon dates that clarified its chronology: 7950–7300 calibrated years BC. They are in a reasonable correspondence with the dates for lower and upper layers. The lithic assemblage belongs to Kukrek cultural aspect. It is characterized by pencil-like conical cores, Kukrek inserts, Kukrek burins and Dęby bu…
The Upper Paleolithic rock art of Ukraine between here and nowhere
The complex of Kamyana Mohyla is the westernmost rock art location of the Eurasian Steppe and the largest accumulation of cave art sites in the Eastern Europe. So far it has been believed that the complex contains the Upper Paleolithic cave art images as well as portable art collection that resemble the instances of Upper Paleolithic worldview. Though this belief lacked the support of archaeological context and chronological attribution it remain…
Innovations of the Beginning of the Sixth Millennium BC in the Northern Pontic Steppe
This study focuses on the pottery-bearing (“Neolithic”) sites of the northern Azov Sea region. The vessels ornamented with comb imprints appeared there in the sixth millennium BC. In the light of a recent re-dating of the Rakushechny Yar site sequence, the sites of the northern Azov region appeared to be the earliest evidence for this innovation. The innovation in the ceramic assemblage is accompanied by an innovative lithic tool set. The latter …
Lithic industry of two Linearbandkeramik sites in Moldova (Nicolaevca V and Ţâra II)
The two Linear Pottery culture lithic complexes presented in this paper came from northern Moldova. The Nicolaevca V assemblage was gathered from excavations of a small LBK dwelling, while the Ţâra II collection came from an eight-shaped pit. There was a “deposit” of objects suitable for knapping found in Nicolaevca V. This complex reflects flake-oriented expedient knapping. The Ţâra II complex represents a complicated sequence for obtaining regu…
On the chronology of the Sabatynivka group of the Cucuteni-Trypillia cultural complex (Central Ukraine)
The paper treats the dating of the Sabatynivka group of Cucuteni-Trypillia. The authors compared the sets of radiocarbon dates, which were obtained for the sites of the aspect, analyzed the relative chronology of the Sabatynivka group, and checked their correspondence with the dating of the contemporaneous cultural aspects. This approach helped to establish the synchronism of the Sabatynivka group with the Skelia phase of Seredny Stog culture, Gu…

The Issue of the Stratigraphy of the Site Sabatinovka I and the Enviromental Settings of the Southern Bug Region in the Eneolithic - Late Bronze Age
The site of Sabatynivka I in the middle part of the Sothern Bug region is known for its collection, a partial analysis of which made it possible to attribute the site to the stage B1 of Cucuteni-Trypillia and to the Sabatynivka culture of the Late Bronze Age. The results of excavations in the 1938-1939 and 1947-1948 have not been fully published. The scientific archive ofthe OAM NASU contains sources that make it possible to reconstruct the excav…

The Last Hunter-Gatherers and Early Farmers of the Middle Southern Buh River Valley (Central Ukraine) in Viii–v Mill. Bc
A new series of 19 radiocarbon dates provides new insights on the human settlement activity in central Ukraine. The paper presents data from the Early Holocene until the establishment of Trypillian mega-sites in the late Vth mill. BC. Our new dates from a long sequence of the site of Melnychna Krucha refine the chronology of the Middle and Late Mesolithic and local ceramic-bearing “Buh-Dniester” culture. Additional dates were obtained on bones fr…
Multi-proxy Archaeobotanical Analysis from Mesolithic and Early Neolithic Sites in South-west Ukraine
This paper presents the results of archaeobotanical studies carried out on the Late Mesolithic layer at Melnychna-Krucha (6460–6100 cal BC) and the Linearbandkeramik (LBK) site of Kamyane-Zavallia (5295–4960 cal BC), close to the Southern Bug River. Despite the relatively modest dataset presented in this paper, these preliminary results provide new data for a region where the environmental setting and the uses of plant resources during the Early …

Kamyane-Zavallia, the Easternmost Linear Pottery Culture Settlement Ever Excavated
The paper presents recent fi eld-work in south-western Ukraine. Three new sites of Linear Pottery Culture were found in the north Odessa region. The Author argues that they constitute a cluster of settlements and indicate the Neolithic colonisation of the region. One of the sites, Kamyane-Zavallia, was excavated. A typical long pit was uncovered, alongside a stone pavement and a narrow, deep trench. They could probably have formed part of a typic…
Insbesondere sollte gek…
