    In the history of the Nationalist movement in China in the early years of this century one of the most prominent roles was played by Hu Hanmin (1879-1936). As a close colleague of Sun Zhongshan (Sun Yat-sen), Hu led a political life which spanned the three decades from the founding of the Tongmeng-hui (Alliance Society) in 1905 to the final acquisition, in name at least, of national power by the Guomindang in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
