On the Source of Interrogative Adverbs
Ambiguous questions like Why do they believe ( that ) she killed him? , where the interrogative word seems to refer to either clause, appear to offer counter-examples to the NP Ecology Constraint proposed in Cattell 1976. But sentences beginning with why are frequently not ambiguous in this way; and when they are ambiguous, they cannot always be explained by appeal to the theory that why has separate origins in the different clauses. Constraints on Movement Rules
A single derivational constraint is here proposed to account for the same data as Ross's Complex NP, Sentential Subject, and Coördinate Structure Constraints. However, if constraints on derivations are not only to prevent the generation of structurally ill-formed strings, but also to illuminate their ungrammaticality fully, they must be combined with certain conditions on structure. Negative Transportation and Tag Questions
The syntactic evidence provided by Robin Lakoff for the existence of a negative transportation rule is examined, and is found to be insufficient to establish the rule. It is shown that performatives are not the only verbs requiring tag questions to be formed on the next S down, and that this is of crucial importance in arriving at an adequate account of tag questions. Attention is drawn to certain semantic regularities which seem to account for t…
Cross-Validational Evidence on the Dimensions of Problem Behavior in the Early Grades
One hundred forty-seven children in the first through the third grades were rated by their teachers on a behavior problem inventory employed in previous studies. The data were subjected to a principal axis factor analysis and rotated to an oblique position. Congruence coefficients were computed among the twelve factors resulting from the current analysis, and the eight factors extracted in an earlier study. Six of the factor matches were signific…
